Scamp Camp/Fiberglass Propane Tanks

Hello! My and DH made the 240 mile round trip today while my daughter was in school to visit Scamp Camp here in Sebring FL. We met so many nice folks and Alice and Jerry were kind enough to take us around to all the various configs of Scamps and Casitas. Unfort. there were no other trailer brands present and we couldnt stay more than a couple of hours. We did see something that caught our eye and so investigated further. It was a Composite/Fiberglass Propane Tank. The couple (sorry, we met so many folks in such a short amount of time I cant remember their names) have a 20 lb on their Scamp and a 10lb for their gas grill. The tanks are much lighter and you can even see through them a bit to see how much propane is left. I Googled them and found several sources including Amazon and they come in colors! Anyway, this is just one of many sources and want to know what you wise folks think? Seems like a great way to reduce tongue weight if needed with the added benefit of being able to visually inspect your propane levels.

Hi Melissa. Hope you found your trip fruitful. There's several members here on FiberglassRV with composite tanks. We've discussed the fact they're unusual enough that some folks have had a hard time getting them filled .... to.... hiding them with a cover because they're expensive folks are afraid someone would steal the tank(s). I think they're cool looking!!! But since I use propane sooo seldom, it's not a concern of mine... neither is tongue weight. Others may and will feel differently.

Yes! We had a fantastic trip just too short. We got back to my daughter's school 15 mins before they got out, whew! There is nothing like being able to physically stand inside and put your hands on a potential trailer. Hubby stood in the bathroom and determined it is useable. We also found out the height difference really does matter between a pre-fire and post fire Scamp for DH. We got to eyeball the bed sizes but hard to tell w/o actually laying on one how "cozy" they are, lol. We also discovered when I'm at the sink at a Casita DH cant slide by but when I stand at the Scamp sink he can. Amazing the difference in fridge sizes/options too! It was nice to see all the mods. Is there a previous thread on the Lighter propane tanks? I didnt know what wording to search for. The couple who have theirs on their Scamp have a vinyl tank cover so when covered you can't tell there is a pricey fancy smancy tank under there
What about chaining the tank to the frame? I know, locks only serve to keep honest people honest but between a cover and a hidden chain maybe it wouldnt grow legs and walk off, lol.
It was a beautiful day today with temps around 64 degrees and spending a couple of hours in a beautiful state park drooling of Fiberglass was the best way it could ever be spent! Good for the soul, lol.

Smile Fiberglass propane tanks

The most popular, and most succesfully marketed fiberglass propane tanks are Norweigen made Ragasco.
Here's a promo video: YouTube - Clear View LP Gas Tanks by Ragasco USA
Here's the USA distributor page: Propane Tanks - Ragasco U.S. Distributor - Fiberglass Propane Tank
No, I don't sell these...but I may want to get a pair soon.

Not speaking from experience with these tanks but similar experience suggest that pigment/color added will increase the opacity. This may make difficult to see the fuel level?

Well sorta. I have an Excel spreadsheet that I keep interesting topic URLs and their reference points. But, I think the fact that I read so much has more to do with it. I can usually remember (generally) when something was posted. The standard search engine here isn't very good. Using the custom Google search engine really does help.

Thanks to this thread, I started doing some research on fiberglass propane tanks. At work, we sell a lot of propane cookers (like turkey fryers), and in a few weeks (after we finish our addition), we will start carrying fiberglass propane tanks from Lite Cylinder! I can't wait... already got my name on a 10lb tank for the Scamp!

I will be sure to post pics and opinions once we actually receive our first shipment.

Hi Melissa,
That would have been Gerry and Priscilla Gallant, from Maine. They desired the lighter tanks to keep the tongue weight down to 200 lbs, which is the limit for the Subaru Outback they used to tow their 16 Scamp. They actually carried the smaller tank in the back of the Subaru.

Thanks, John. The name Gerry kept coming to mind but I thought I was just getting confused with "Jerry" who was kind enough to show us around all day.
