The town losing all that economy is a bigger tragedy. We can always find trailers, and if not.. life will not crumble. Jobs in small town USA is another problem.

I would suspect that thier email is still quite functional, unless on the offhand chance they had an on site server.
Scamp doesn't have and never has had email.

Byron is a lucky man, he just got delivery of one of the last from there. I wonder how many were after his?

Ya, I wonder the same thing.

I've got mine in an RV shop at the moment doing some "warranty" work.

What are the molds made of? Could they have survived for the most part?

no they could not survive they are made out of wood & fiberglass they would have burned.but the more important part is to keep that town afloat...

So sad.
I should have visited them last week, instead of delaying my trip up there to the first week of February. Any one close enough to get some detailed information and pictures?

Wow. I hope they were fully covered by insurance.

Does anyone know if they made the shells on site or if they had them trucked to the factory.

It would be a tremendous loss to the industry if they are not able to resume business.

That is a major bummer. I so hope they had insurance coverage and are able to rebuild.

Might be a good opportunity for them to step into the 90s...

This must be devastating for the employees and owners. I am anxious to hear what the insurance situation is. It is probably too optimistic to expect that the molds were off site, but that would probably jump-start the rebuilding.

I just hope that the leadership rises to the occasion and manages to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear situation. It may be an opportunity for rethinking the design and make it even better. But for now the town must be in bad shape, with a lot of families wondering what will happen next. Very sad.

Sad news indeed, Lyndon! Thanks for sharing with us. I searched all of the Minnesota TV stations for news to link to, and couldn't find anything as of 7:30 AM CST Saturday. If anyone finds any articles about this, please post links.

I've never been to the factory, just spoken with Kent by phone. I THINK there is several buildings...when I spoke to Kent, he said he had to go to the "other building" to get the information. Now that could mean the administrative offices were in one building and everything else was in another...or "Fit and Finish" was in one building, molds in another, etc.

I've been to a fiberglass hot rod body building business and their molds were in a totally separate building because of the need to run big exhaust fans, etc.

All this is just speculation, I'm just glad to hear no one was hurt.

Can you believe this happened on Friday the 13th

The following link was posted on the Yahoo Scampers group. It leads to photos of the fire as well as video. It was a night fire so things are pretty dark, but you can make out the roof line of the building fairly well. This was one INTENSE fire!!!

Exactly right, Donna - office building and main plant. I sent an e-mail of condolence and support to the webmaster at the Backus MN website: http://www.backusmn.com

This is just so dang sad. Not only for the owners, employees, folks who had trailers on order, etc. but those of us that currently own Scamps. All that history may very well be lost. Scamp had information on every single trailer they had ever built. I called with my VIN number and Kent was able to give me information I needed to replace the axle.

It's not the end of the world obviously, just could very well be one bump in the road for rebuilding/modifying.

Thank goodness for communities such as FiberglassRV, the wealth of information maintained by members here is terrific.

If anyone cares to send a note by snail-mail:
