Fiberglass friends,
Has anyone heard of a cause for the Scamp factory fire?
Tony
I know absolutely nothing about Scamp's particular case, but fires at laminating factories tend to come from 'hot mixes' - if you put lots of catalyst into a polyester mix to get it to gel quickly (a 'hot mix'), and there is plenty left in the pot, it will get hot enough to spontaneously combust. Leave enough in a pot and even a normal catalyst ratio mix will get very hot.

They start to smell real bad and then smoke a bit, before they catch light, so if you are near a hot mix that is going to go up, you will know about it! Sensible laminating practice is to put surplus mixes outside if they are not going to be kept under observation - and exactly the same procedure should be followed at home. Another way to avoid the problem is to increase the surface area of a mix - for example, pouring it into a paint roller tray.

The fact that the Scamp fire occurred after the end of the working day, and a Friday at that, makes me wonder if someone was more interested in going home than in making a hot mix safe......

But I guess I should apologise in advance to all the people working at Scamp if the cause was external!

Andrew

Moderator's note: "John the Glassman" has joined us, with an Official Word on the future of Scamp.

Yes Scamp is rebuilding,We are building new plugs to make the new molds from. There will be some changes for sure, and rest assured that all will be for the good. We currently have a small crew working on the new plugs. Once we are done with the plugs they are being sent out to have new molds built from the plugs. This is being done because of space limitations now. As soon as the old building is released from the fire investigators,a new building is to be started right away. The fire is believed to have started in a dust collecter in the grinding area. The goal right now is to get the 16' shells finished first so that the custom shop can continue working and putting out trailers. Then then remaining parts for the 16 will be completed, then 13,then 5th wheel.
What do you think about a Grand Reopening Campout???????????

Thank you, John, for that report. As you can tell, many people here are concerned about your company's situation... and not all of them are Scamp owners! (yet?)

Keep us posted.

Thanks so much for the on-the-ground update, John! If we didn't live 3,000 miles away ...and have to work, we'd be at the grand opening camp-out in a heartbeat. Great idea!

A Grand Reopening Scamp-out in Backus would be a great celebration, and the sooner the better! You can count on this UHauler to join you Scampers, with all the best wishes in the world.

Glad to have you abord John and to hear first hand news. A reopening gathering would be great and would be glad to help out. As far as changes in the basic design don't make too many as most of us feel that you made a first class basic unit. Of coarse most of us make a lot of MODS to ours but that is part of it . I always say our 5er is perfect for 2 people that like each other very much. Have towed it now 75,000 miles. and only problem were the original tires. See ya at the opening.

John, Welcome and thanks for the good news!

A Grand Re-Opening Scamp-Out would be a superb idea! You'll probably need several THOUSAND acres!

Keep us posted!

Yes Scamp is rebuilding,
May I be the first person from another continent to say that's good news and to wish you every success?

I will end here and start baking the humble pie, as I am the one that suggested it might have been a hot mix.......

Okay, everyone: check your dryers, vacuum cleanerss, furnace vents, even compost heaps if the weather has been dry: mother nature can start a fire when you least expect it. Thanks for the heads up, and let's be careful out there!

John, thanks for the update. I am so glad you are rebuilding!!! I was up there last summer for some repairs, and I love my Scamp. I was impressed by the friendlyness of everyone at the factory. You are some great folks.
A Scamp grand reopening celebration of the new factory in Backus is a great idea.
We all felt so bad for you all when hearing of the fire. Soooo Sad! Friday the 13th it was, we will remember that date. We are hoping for a quick recovery for you all so you can get back to work, and things being normal once again. It has been a very stressful winter for you all, and you are in our prayers.
Thanks much for the update, and please keep us posted.

Hi John
As others have mentioned, the Grand Reopening Campout would be great. If there is anything I can help you folks with in planning this event, just let me know. I am sure there are a lot of us in MN and neighboring States that would be delighted in helping plan the event.
