Scamp stolen in Dallas TX, 7 Nov 2018

This was posted in the Scamp Facebook Group and it was requested this it be reposted, so here it is...

From ‎Hollis Wakefield:

***PLEASE REPOST/BOLO ONLINE!!*** Our beloved camper was stolen today [Nov 7] around 11:30am in Dallas TX (Oak Cliff near Beckley and Crestwood). Please keep your eyes out for it online! Trailer’s license plate is 5YH 444. It’s a vintage 1970’s Scamp. Two men with a red truck can be seen hauling it through our neighborhood. Looks like they may have removed their front plates. We had an $80 hitch lock on it but I guess they cut through it. The trailer was also full of our camping equipment. ... Thank you so much in advance.

What hitchlock brand did you use - it would be helpful if you wouldn't mind sharing so others are aware of how easily many of these locks can be defeated

Hope you get your Scamp back

Best Wishes

Maybe I should remove the wheels?

I looked at the Facebook post - the owner thinks the thieves may have just chained the trailer to their truck without using the hitch. I can see how easy that might be for a short haul.
Last year I did remove the wheels when I had my Scamp 13 parked for a few months. Has anyone used a wheel clamp - like the Denver Boot or similar?

IF you're going to buy a boot for the trailer tire, make sure it's one worth your money.

Posting for a fellow fiberglass trailer owner. Hollis Wakefield This is the fourth camper/RV stolen in our neighborhood in two weeks and I'm not expecting much help from local law enforcement (not because they don't care, but because they're understaffed). If you see it online please alert police and message me on FB, email me at holliswakefield@gmail.com, or text at 817.917.9740. <3 Thanks again!

Donna, & others, it appears a wheel clamp is not enough. This boot has a face plate covering the lug nuts. I have also thought an 8' metal rod with a welded disc on one end, and a padlock through the other end, could be run through both wheels. I think the police radar trailer had that. I understand it could be cut, but a good supplement.

Chip it.

Place a tracking chip on trailer like some people use on high end touring bikes. I know that they exist and am preparing to install one on my 2007 Scamp. Have no supplier info.

This was suggested by someone.. its part of a family of devices, SDKs, etc. The collection of hardware and software projects look like a geek's dream.

I'm sure there are GPS tracking devices that are much easier to use. Even a hidden cell phone can work.

Keeping the battery charged is the issue with this.

Well if you expect to keep the camper in a storage lot with no power source for a month.. then yes.

If you want to be alerted when it leaves you driveway, or when you are away from camp for the day, then it works fine (assuming cell phone coverage of course).

BTW, I have a wireless alarm sensor on my camper than is part of my home alarm system... It does no good when away from home but it does give me a little more piece of mind when it is stored in my driveway which is anytime I not using it.
