I have been to several RV dealers to 'look' to see whats new just for curiosity..... I tell them I have a Scamp 5th wheel and they dont seem to be interested in a trade in... why is this? Seems all they say is 'you'd be better off selling it on your own?"
Its like they dont want to be bothered or something.
I know we all know what our FG trailers are 'really' worth to us... even if NADA totally under estimates the value.

That's because RV dealers just don't get it.
If it's not run of the mill goods they don't want to touch it.

They're probably telling you the truth, too. I mean, if, say, your unit is worth $8000, then they probably can't justify giving you more than $6000 for it, because they have to do their usual dealerish sprucing up, etc., and then they need to make a profit to cover the their for-profit business expenses.

Since you're probably as likely to be able to sell said unit for $8000 yourself, you'll make the extra $2000. Since selling a clean, well-priced fiberglass trailer is not too difficult, there's your extra money.

Granted, that's true for ANY item you trade in, generally (that you get more for selling it yourself), so it probably does indicate some reluctance for the dealer to take on something unusual for them. In other words, dealers would normally suppress that information when a unit is something they do want to take in and sell, and they were simply making an exception with you and telling you what holds for all units. There were probably other factors at play too, of course.

Raya

PS: What's "NFGR" stand for?

I just put the NFGR ( non fiberglass related) because I wasnt refering to any or my fiberglass unit specifically.... just curious as to why the "sticky' dealerships arent interested to take them as trade ins...

My guess is they have been down that road before. Heed their advice.
Plus given the current economic conditions, I doubt they want extra stock sitting on the lot.

For Raya's benefit I think N*GR = No * Good Reason ?

Oops,
My Bad,

I just read Christi's response. NFGR = Non Fiber Glass Related

Roy, get your mind out of the gutter and both feet out of your mouth, it's dinner time.

I thought of that, but then figured since it was about trading in a Scamp that maybe it meant something else. Thanks for the clarification - I have to know what acronyms mean

Like Broccoli, I find that Fiberglass is an acquired taste. Sometimes I am hard-pressed to get my friends to be enthusiastic about it. "But It's so much more expensive than the 'normal' kind. You can get a much bigger aluminum one for a lot less."

Trading in used stuff is a lot like going to a pawn shop... They have to really low-ball what they'll give you so they can fit in a 30% margin and still sell it to someone else for less than a new one. After awhile customers get insulted and irate when they hear what the dealers will offer on trade, which makes for a bad day all around. I think that they are just cutting to the chase: they can see little profit and lots of work ahead, so they try to shuffle your trade-in away with you merely disappointed and avoiding making you angry.

I think it's sort of the same as the Big Guys looking down at us. You know the ones that always say "Can you stand up in that thing?"

They really don't know the quality of our little rigs.
