I believe you meant to say "Ultragauge". There is a device called Ultrascan but it's thousands of dollars (a pro mechanic tool).

Quite correct Mike.

Another chance to play around with Ultra Gauge today. If your going down a slight incline and take your foot off the gas the instantaneous mpg jumps to 60 mpg, if you put the car in neutral it jumps over 100 mpg. Easy to do on our manual transmission.

With the Ultragauge, driving on the backroads, I now get highway mileage.

Actually, it depends on the vehicle... it is not supported with my '96 Toyota Land Cruiser (with a couple of new hail dents this morning!).

Hi, Everyone - I'm confused. It looks to me like the ScanGaugeII does pick up transmission temperature; and the UltraGauge Automatic says it does not pick up transmission temp. Did anyone ever actually get one of these to show the Subaru transmission temp?

As I understand it, Subaru transmissions do not report temperature to the engine computer, which is the module that ScanGauge talks to. Instead, they report temperature to a separate transmission computer. The transmission computer talks to the engine computer, but is does not share transmission temperature.

I have a Scan Gauge II and use it to monitor the transmission temps on my Jimmy's transmission when towing my 13' Trillium. I am surprised how much difference the ambient temperature makes. Last week I drove the I95 between New Brunswick and Portland ME. In the afternoon it was 82* and I had a high of 213* after hills but leveled off at 204*. At night the ambient temperature dropped to 41* and my transmission temp stayed steady at 176*; the same road and driving conditions except temperature. I also noticed that if I allow the transmission to shift itself into 'passing' gear rather than shifting myself into 3rd, the transmission temperature rose more quickly and higher.
The ScanGaugeII has a LOD gauge which shows the engine load. I use this to let me know the point at which the transmission will shift into passing gear and shift down manually just before.
Of course, it is also great for reporting fuel consumption.
