Yes, I saw that too, but as described in earlier posts, the question is whether the vehicle has an [b]automatic transmission temperature sensor that can be read by OBDII. Automatic transmission temperature is a critical measure when towing.

I also contacted SOA and got the following response: Dear Mr. Johnson:

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us. The response to your message from our Technical Services Department is:

Our system of SSMIII can read the transmission temp but I do not know if aftermarket scanners can do the same. P0712 & P0713 are both trans temp sensor codes. These codes do not mean much without the troubleshooting information located on STIS.

As for STIS, that is Subaru Technical Information Site. Subaru Technical Service Manuals are available online at http://techinfo.subaru.com/html/index.jsp. Instructions are on this web site on how to subscribe and/or purchase publications.

If you need any future assistance, Mark, please let us know. Have a great day.

Mark J again: So it appears to me that the scan gauge would show tranmission temps using the PO sensor codes. And thanks for your responses. I have been on again, off again and perhaps on again about a trans cooler. Towing without a cooler may void the warranty and well as installing one during the warranty. A car buyer just can't win, the auto companies have it all figured out anyway!

Brian,

If you look at the list of "more programmable guages" you will find on page 5, GM CANSF lists the codes for Trans Temp.

This may not work for your vehicle, but it won't kill your vehicle if you try it.

Charlie

P.S. The codes P0712 & P0713 are identical to the codes on my Escalade.

Ultra Scan $59.

I just received my Ultra Scan. It displays 6 gauges on a page. It has 3 seperate pages of gauges making for a total of 18 gauges visible to the driver. You can have a single page appear all the time, step between pages by pushing a button or have it automatically roatate between pages at a selectable time interval.

There are upto 75 gauges, depending on vehicle, that you can select from and assign to one of three pages. My favorite gauges are Instantaneous Gas Mileage and % Engine Load (torque used/peak torque). I don't know if it will change my driving habits but it's interesting to see it read 70 mpg when rolling to a stop light instead of a much lower number when you race up to a light and than apply the brakes.

I admit to still learning but it seems to work well. Certainly the price is right.

Following is a support page for Ultra Scan. A good manual and information about use on different vehicles.

Definitely a modifier of driving behavior. It's really neat to see the mpg jump up to 100 mpg as you roll to a stop sign. Equally you're doing a mild down hill run and lift your foot off the throttle and see 50 mpg. It's like a little game.

That UltraGauge looks like it will be a strong competitor to the ScanGauge. Especially with the price at one third that of ScanGauge. I would probably have gotten that instead of ScanGauge if it had been available (or I knew about it). Don't know when it went on the market.

Ultra Scan

I have looked over the Ultra Gauge web site and I do not find any information that would indicate the Ultra Gauge will measure transmission temperatures. This to me would seem to be a critical measurement while towing.

Am I missing something? Is this something measured by the alarms?

UltraGauge currently does not support Manufacturer specific gauges such as Transmission temperature.

First Usage Report.

It appears that neither gauge supports transmission temperature from all I read. They both support coolant temperature. In my case we have a manual transmission and it's not an issue. Both these devices can only display info supplied by the manufacturer. For example both gauges support battery voltage but Honda does not provide it on our 2004 Honda CRV.

Today I drove into Logan airport during morning rush to drop some people off from York, ME, some 142 miles.

I stopped for gas when I got home.

The scan gauge said we averaged 27.7 mpg and used 5.1 gallons.

To test accuracy I filled up and I calculated that we averaged 27.68 mpg and used 5.18 gallons.

During the trip we averaged 43.4 mph, indicative of the morning rush hour traffic.

All in all I found the gauge pretty accurate.

I didn't see it on their web site. Definitely worth having with an automatic.

You probably have to make an X-gauge for it. That's where you create a custom gauge by accessing vehicle-specific info. X-gauge can also do some math to create custom readouts.

I contacted Scangauge and they now provide transmission temps for Ford, GM and some VWs. They are working on Toyota. Ultra scan is presently in development for Ford, GM and Toyota Prius. If you are an Ultrascan user you can offer to be part of the beta program for transmission temperature gauges.

Unlike the other gauges, there is apparantly not a manufacturer's standard.

I have a ScangauageII. I was able to get trans temp on my 2002 Tacoma V6 / AT by using the "X-gauge" function.

I have not been able to get trans temp on my Nissan Frontier yet. But I really like the Scan gauge.

Not that it seems to make much difference finacially but interesting to me. I made a repeat trip to Logan now more conscious of Ultra Scan and instantaneous mileage. The first trip I averaged 27.7 mpg on this second virtually identical trip I averaged 28.6 mpg. I'm really curious to see how the numbers change when towing.

Having information always helps.

I bought one specifically to help find my 'sweet spot' when towing my Trillium. I drive long distances, like 4,000 miles back and forth from Florida, so every little bit helps. After you input the engine size and gas tank capacity initially you need to update the amount of fuel (and cost if that interests you) at each fill up but the system calculates usage so accurately it prompts you with the number of gallons it expected to be added although this number can be adjusted. I now drive slower generally and I don't mind slowing down a bit on hills. The instrument pays for itself in short order. I don't hold up traffic. I pull over on 2 lane roads if a few cars back up behind me and I stay in one of the right hand lanes on the interstate.

Barrie, We're heading to your neck of the woods, PEI, in JUly for the egg rally. It will be our first towing test of the gauge. Looking forward to the test.
