Selling a Travel Trailer in California

Hi all! I'm researching how to fill out the appropriate DMV paperwork to sell a travel trailer (19' Escape, so not a "camping trailer" or a trailer with a permanent plate).

The pink slip has a place to fill out an odometer reading. Obviously we don't have an odometer on the Escape. Failure to fill out the odometer portion "may result in fines and/or imprisonment".

It seems ridiculous that this section even be on a pink slip (certificate of title) for a travel trailer. The form REG 138A clearly states that we don't need to fill out odometer mileage on it, so why no matching disclaimer for the attached pink slip (REG 17.30RS)?

When we bought the trailer it had been registered in OR, so we didn't have this hassle.

Should we fill out the odometer mileage as "0" and then mark the box that states "Odometer reading is not the actual mileage", and then certify under penalty of perjury that it's true? Or do we leave it blank despite the verbiage? What have others done when selling in CA?

Thanks!!!!

It does not have an odometer so no problem at all. That does not apply. We had the same thing. We probably either put a line there or N/A.

We just left it blank, both selling and buying. The disclaimer is to prevent fraud on odometer readings for vehicles... So you are good!

Thank you all! We have completed the transaction and decided to leave it blank.

On that note, we've sold our Escape, which is sad I love the new class B motorhome (to use as a tow vehicle for a cargo trailer that hauls bikes and team gear), but the egg had a special place in my heart. Maybe there will be another one in our future ... I'd love to buy a baby egg (13') and fix it up as a sweet studio for home that can also go with us for the boys.

Why do not not think a 19' Escape is not a "camping trailer" for DMV paperwork purposes?

It is very much a trailer and is was built and designed for camping purposes.

In California, a "Camp Trailer" is under 16 feet and qualifies for Permanent Trailer Identification tags (PTI). A camping trailer over 16 feet is, I believe, technically a trailer coach, and does not qualify for PTI tags. Any trailer under 16 feet is eligible for PTI.

Yes, in CA a camping trailer is 16' or less, and also encompasses trailers that don't have the full complement of amenities to make it considered a self-contained unit (sleeping, kitchen, and bathroom facilities).

Since trailers that are 16' or less qualify for the permanent trailer plate they are the sweet spot for small trailers. Over 16 feet we pay annual registration by the foot.
