I know in Germany, instead of the mandatory two weeks we get in US, they START at six weeks and work up from there. I believe most of Western Europe is similar.

Reportedly, many Australian companies give 20 year employees a fully paid six-MONTH vacation and a bonus to spend.

By Golly, you are right! I always thought it was a law for all, but apparently not in Calif. In Germany it IS a law and the gummint keeps track of it if you switch employers.

I've always worked for organizations with vacation policies.

Not a law in Oregon either. Time is not mandated. Most expect to get certain holiday's off... paid. I have a friend that doesn't get paid holiday pay if the day falls on Saturday or Sunday... nor an extra day off at a different time!

and in Texas.... not only do employers not have to give vacation time, it is a benefit, they also do not have to pay overtime wages for any time worked over 40 hours. I worked in a machine job shop for a short time with that setup.

There is, I believe, a Federal Law concerning overtime, but it only applies to employees paid under a certain amount. IIRC, those employees are known as Non-Exempt.
