Skunked dog

I can't even begin to imagine how horrible it would be to have a dog tangle with a skunk and the dog typically sleeps in the trailer! At anyrate, saw this on Yahoo and thought it may be of value to some. I know there are commercial chemical products available, but this stuff is pretty common and has other uses as well. BTW: Bandon Beach State Park has skunks! For those coming to the Oregon Gathering, keep your dogs out of the bushes!

I read the title and thought "good luck".

Years ago when I was younger, my grandpa and I took the dump truck to lay some gravel around a water trough in a pasture. Meanwhile, the two crazy blue heelers cornered a skunk in an abandoned house, and tore the thing to shreds. The dogs were literally WET with skunk. He wouldn't put them in the box, so they sat in the middle, and we hung our heads out the window for the 30 minute ride home.

I'm in the pest control/nuisance wild life business. We have used that mixture for years it works.

I called into a local organic show called the Dirt Doctor here in Dallas back in 95 with that formula and he published it. I found it in a Seattle newspaper. The logic was that a chemist thought to himself "every liquid is a chemical formula of a mixture of x,y,z." So he actually analyzed skunk spray and then said well if I add Na042H3O blah blah I can change skunk to lily smell. (just made the smell up) but that was his logic of actually converting a bad thing to a different chemical and not just masking it or trying to wash it away. Pretty cool. Now if I could turn lead into gold.

Great tip! Many moons ago I had a german shepard that got sprayed. I tried tomato juice and a product from the vet called "skunk off". These two methods took the edge off the stench but didn't fix it. Then a groomer told me to dump coke on the dog, let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse. It worked! Your tip would work much better for big dogs (I now have a lab) because a shitzsu would need a can of coke, my lab would need a case

I can also confirm that the mixture that Donna posted the link to really does work well. But you will need about 3x what they say to clean a labrador up. Had a lab who just never got it that skunks where not like the neighbor's cat who he had a good relationship with.

For the curious...
Wikipedia: Removal of Skunk Odor
It describes this formula, and explains how it works.

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.
