Just bought this radio at REI . http://www.rei.com/product/735745 This is GREAT radio to have when camping for weather alerts.

I agree with Bob, however in a crowded area like Chicago you can be awakened for an alert that is over in Indiana sometimes ( maybe 70 miles away). And you really need to know what county you are in and the surrounding counties or nothing will make sense..

BUT on the safe side I guess it's better to know something is close and getting alerted than being asleep and getting whacked.

So what does it run on at night?

I finally turned ours off because it kept going off for the really wide area around where we live and we couldn't get any sleep.
All the way from Richmond, va to Washington DC.

We always check the weather channel on the TV B4 we go to bed to get an idea what the whether is going to be.

It's also got a hand crank on the side for charging up the battery. I have a flashlight that works like that. Kinda handy.

One other side of this that no one has pointed out is how vital this radio can be AFTER a disaster event. It great as a warning device, but its absolutely a godsend where you have no power, no cell phones, no regular phones, and no other means of getting news. After a major storm, tornado, hurricane, or any other disaster, your fiberglass egg may be serving more than just a occasional camping trailer, you may be living in it. And consider that until normal lines of communication can be restored, a solar & hand cranked radio may be your only link to the outside world.

I don't know if this particular model has it, but some hand cranked radios can also recharge cellphones and laptops.

Of course it's only to recieve news... I'd naturally suggest a CB or Ham Radio as another investment in communication security. Two-way comm is the way to go, anything that'll let someone know that you are there.

This Radio will NOT charge a cellphone. We lose power at our house at least 3 times a year. This is another reason I bought this radio because of solar power and crank power. I also have a crank flashlight.
