Some minor changes, Linking to photos.

An ongoing issue has come to the point where we needed to make an alteration. The issue is “Linking to photos on other servers.”

There are several things that come into play, the biggest of which is burning up Bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of internet data that moves across the lines to and from different servers. We have seen this in both linking photos from other forums, private albums and commercial websites. All servers are charged based on Bandwidth and Storage Space used.

In addition to the Bandwidth, Linking slows down load times. This is extremely difficult for people who are on dial-up accounts.

The last issue is that over size photos linked into this site make our website lose its ability to fit within the normal screen sizing.

Photos in the signatures cause an extreme amount of bandwidth because they load hundreds of times where people post multiple times in one thread. Personally I like them and think they add to the sense of community we have here. The issue is the size of the photos and the amount of “LOAD” they cause. The little icons in the signatures really do not cause much load. The photos of personal trailers and or tow rigs do cause quite a bit more load.

Our storage capacity is quite large and it is in our best interest to have everyone upload all images to our system. The additional benefit is, that when the posts age, the photos will remain available to future archive searches. Currently, many older posts have lost their images that illustrate the text posted.

So at this point, we have deleted the WYSIWYG editor button that links photos to our website. If you are a programmer and know how to work around the editor, please do not.

PS: If you are having trouble uploading photos, please read our helps section or ask for help.

Thank You all for your understanding and help,
Mike

Makes sense, Mike! I participate in other forums which allow huge images, and the ones in signature lines are particularly annoying. Yes, I sometimes use dialup.

As I understand this, the currently linked photos in existing posts will still work... good.

Is there a guideline for reasonable size of images in signatures?

Information is good. Lack of information is not so good, but misinformation is much worse. Check facts, and apply common sense liberally.

Mike, You are right; but also, we want to make room for what Mary has.

Does this mean no more photobucket etc.
If so YES I can handle that. Got tired of always having to go to somewhere else to view photos no matter how good the presentation. In the thread....MUCH better. Now get rid of the QUOTE, QUOTE, QUOTE. If I got that far then I have already read the thing at least once.

Woops!
First thread I went to and there it was, a reference to Webshots. Guess I read this article wrong and since I didn't put in a quote, I guess I'll go back to the beginning and re-read the whole thing again.

James, You may have gotten it 'zackly backwards. We don't encourage images hosted by another site (where the image displays here but is on someone else's server), but URLs to those other sites (Photobucket, etc.) are okay.

What we prefer is that people upload their photos here, so they fit our size needs, and so we'll still have them if the Photobucket/Webshots accounts fade into oblivion.

Sorry for any "confusement."

Thanks, Mary
As you can figure out, I'm not the quickest person when it comes to computers. I grew up in an age whae counting was done with piles of stones. So far I've progressed to the two fingeer hunt and peck system. Just an old fox trying to keep up. Keep hammering away, I'll get it yet.

You're doing just fine, Jim. I appreciate the opportunity to explain it to everybody. (I'll bet there are others with your same question, who are also glad you asked!)

And, ditto what Donna said. Happy Birthday to YOU, and to my brother-in-law!!

Mike, I learned to type on a typewriter, so computers came later in life and I'm not the best. Can you tell me why the pictures are over the text, and what I do to move them up, down or to the side in order to read the text. I have a mac if this makes a difference. Thanks for any assistance I can get. I love reading the forum.

Hold command+shift and click the number 4. Then drag across the part of the screen you want to save.

The screen shot will be saved on your desk top.

Robert,

Here are some broad steps. Can you tell us where you are in this process? We can help you get through it, and you'll love being able to post photos.

Step 1) The first step is to get a digital photo from your camera into a file on your computer's hard drive (your computer's "file cabinet," so to speak).

Step 2) Then you get the photo from your computer onto this board's server (think of the server like a big file cabinet they have).

Step 3) Then you get the photo from their server into your message that you're typing and about to post on the board.

So, where are you in this series of steps?

Raya
