Starting to formulate a plan for a trip south in January or February to escape the rain and chill here in Vancouver. Assuming a week to ten days for the trip, where would you go? I'd rather camp than drive, so Baja is a little too far.
I would expect to put in a long day driving, the first day and then take it easy. And, I have no plans to buy snow tires for the RAV so I expect to have to avoid high mountain passes.

Robert and I sometimes do ridiculously long drives in impossibly short time spans. The penultimate journey was our 2005 "Long, Long Trailer Trip" driving from San Diego, California to the North Shore of Oneida Lake, New York, and then on to The 2005 Oregon Gathering in Bandon Oregon, before returning to San Diego, California, covering some 7,000 miles within 16 Days. The last leg of the trip was a single marathon run from Bandon, Oregon to San Diego, California; approximately 900 miles in 23 hours.

Given the parameters you suggest, I speculate the farthest south you get [b]comfortably, might be the San Francisco Bay area.
Not egg-sackedly a tropical paradise that time of year.

I have (Egg Buddys) SnowBird friends that hibernate in/around Central Point OR, not too far south, just far enough away to get out of MOST of our monsoons!!! Lots of R/V parks around there too.....

I just looked up weather history for Central Point in Jan. and Feb.

The high was about 48F and the low was almost freezing. I didn't look at precipitation. Google says it takes 9 hours 30 minutes to get there from here. So, I think I'm now talking about two hard days driving in each direction.

Maybe we'll just book that all-inclusive resort that the Old Bag keeps suggesting for my 60th birthday. Five hours to Mexico if you ignore hanging around in airports. Or better yet, save the vacation time for next summer.

If you want to go south: Here are some neat places in NM and AZ if you have not noticed them on the forum yet.

Texas State Parks are really nice: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/
South Llano River State Park adjoins Walter Buck Wildlife Management Area, south of Junction is great as is Pedernales Falls State Park in Blanco County east of Johnson City. We have been to both. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...h_llano_river/
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...ernales_falls/

Balmorhea State Park is located in the foothills of the Davis Mountains southwest of Balmorhea and nearby Davis Mountains State Park (along with the famous Big Bend Nat'l Park) are very nice places and one could spend a long time at each. Been to all except Davis, but it is nice areas, be sure to visit the old Ft. Davis a nice place to see.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...rks/balmorhea/

Goose Island State Park, surrounded by the St. Charles and Aransas Bays, is located north of Rockport & near Freeport in Aransas County. Nice area by the Gulf of Mexico. I want to do this one someday.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f.../goose_island/

Mustang Island State Park with about 5 miles of beach on the Gulf of Mexico in Nueces County, south of Port Aransas. We liked this one for the beach.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...ustang_island/

Lake Corpus Christi State Park southwest of Mathis was a nice one. But not very close to Corpus. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...orpus_christi/

Goliad State Park is located by Goliad with a nice campground on the San Antonio River. (a lot of Texas History in this area, some from same time as the famous Alamo fight: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...spiritu_santo/ ) Been to it and would go back.

Falcon State Park is located north of Roma at the southern end of the International Falcon Reservoir in Starr and Zapata Counties. A lot of snow birds winter in this area.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f.../parks/falcon/

Lake Mineral Wells State Park is located east of Mineral Wells in Parker County. I would like to visit it someday. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...mineral_wells/

Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site is located west of Comstock near Langtry in Val Verde County. I have this one on my to see list someday. We have stopped at the Langtry Visitor Center. I love the history of the area.

http://www.texasescapes.com/TOWNS/Te...gtry_Texas.htm
http://www.texasescapes.com/TOWNS/Te...c_overlook.htm

Monahans Sandhills State Park is about a half-hour's drive west of Odessa. A neat place.
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/f...ans_sandhills/

Big Bend National Park is also a choice. http://www.nps.gov/bibe/

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is a possiblity as well. http://www.nps.gov/gumo/

Padre Island Nat'l Park could be also. http://www.nps.gov/pais/

I realize these would have to have a lot of driving time invested to get to them and return. Maybe they would be better once you have a month or more to invest into a trip. Good luck in finding a somewhat dry place, however a lot of the places a little south of you may be colder than were you are. At least as I understand the weather up in your part of the world.

Good luck! We tend to be high and dry here most of the time. We were lucky each time we visted your neck of the woods to be in a dry period.

Wow. Thanks for all the links. That should keep me busy for a while. I guess I'm looking at two weeks though, eh?

Hi Glenn -

We are in the Sacramento area and have taken lots of weekend trips to the coast. Look at San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. Nice weatber, beautiful coast. Personally wouldn't stop before SLO. Frisco is too damned cold and crowded. Starts to thin out nicely from Carmel south, and by SLO it's really nice. Santa Barbara is GREAT. Or head out to Palm Springs.

Given that, you WILL have to watch I-5 in northern Calif. It DOES get chain controls up from time to time.
Also, once you hit the Great Central Valley, you could very possibly hit some THICK fog. Sometimes so bad it doesn't really burn off during the day.

Sounds like a nice trip. I retire in a year, and we plan to scoot to AZ or NM from time to time over the winter.

Another though... Feb or so is the best time to go to Death Valley. LOTS of choices. All great.

Glen, two hard days driving down 'the slot' (I-5) will put you well past San Fran, then head east or south east. This should give ya at lest a full week (IF you are taking 2 weeks) in the 'oven' country, LOL!!!!
