Spotted Scamp motor home todau

We pulled into a Loves travel center today in AZ next to a Scamp motor home based on Dodge Dakota. I thought maybe the owner just put Scamp decals on it but the driver said it is his brothers rv and he bought it that way. It clearly has the traditional Scamp stripes and you can see part of the Scamp name at the back. I got part of my Scamp16 in the picture but then missed part of the back of the other one.
So, did Scamp really make small motor homes at one point?

I believe most are on a Ford Ranger chassis. Not many made. Raz

One of those Dodges with a 318 should have enough grunt to pull a nice boat or other toys, if one was so inclined.

There was a buzz going around Rocky Bayou SP in February that one camper had a Scamp motorhome. I did not get a chance to talk to him though.

I'd buy a Dakota version.

All you have to do is look at the second group of Dakota pictures to see the wheel and chassis setup on the Dodge and know that's the one you want.

The Ford wheels and chassis setup looks like it would suffer the same fate as many of the Toyota Motorhome's of the late 70's to early to mid 80's and have rear-end problems due to excess weight on a rear-end with adapters for the dual rear conversion. There was a HUGE safety recall over this issue!

Based upon the picture of the Dodge Scamp motorhome above it's a V6 equipped Dakato Scamp and the year model must be 1990 or earlier. The 318 V8 was not available until the 1991 model year for Dakota when the grill, hood and front-end changed which resulted in a 3 inch extension of the front end allowing room for installation of the 318 V8. The 318 V8 Dakota was available from 1991 until the end of the first generation Dodge Dakota in 1996 and in the second generation Dodge Dakota's from 1997 to 2004. There were also some 360 CI Dodge Dakota's in the second generation production run. The 318 Dakota died with the production of the third generation Dakota beginning in the 2005 model year.

Anyone know what model years Scamp produced the "Motorhome" Scamps????

Interesting if you look at the picture of the Dakota Scamp you saw at the station. Look at the front wheels/tires. Stock standard Dakota front wheels, tires and hubs. The rear is "Dually" and although I cannot tell from the picture I'll bet the dually conversion was accomplished with "adapters" on the original rear-end. Looking at that rear wheel assembly in the first picture by blowing it up it does not appear to have a "Full Floating" dually rear-end. If that is the case you could very easily have the same problems experienced by the Toyota's and Nissan campers from the same era which was rear-end wheel bearing problems and problems with wheels falling off due to rear-end axle failures caused by weight overloading of the rear-end and rear suspension. There was a huge safety recall with the Toyota's due to this very issue. My bet is that the Dakota Scamp you saw at the station was probably a 87-88 due to the front wheel hubs not being converted to "Bud" type wheels and the adapter dually conversion on the rear-end.

Look at the other pictures posted of a Dakota Scamp. Those pics show a true "dually" front "Bud" type wheel/suspension assembly along with the rear "Dully" wheels and rear-end that appears to be a true full floating "Dually" rear-end. Much better setup capable of handling the total weight of this conversion.

Hello Don and welcome to the forum. I'm sure a lot of folks would appreciate knowing what you know of the history of these vehicles. And of course pictures are always welcome. Raz

If you check the other thread in which Don posted there is more information, including the fact that 14 were made in 1985 and 1986.

Awesome camper, Don!

I would love to check the other thread. Could you please direct me to it as I have repeatedly searched this thread looking for a link or direction to another thread?

Thanks, Donna, and sorry, Mike! I was using the app and inserting internal links is very cumbersome.

In general you can click on the user name (or avatar in the app) and look up other posts by someone. That's how I found Don's other post and links to more information about Scamp mohos.

I'll keep my eyes open in case one of these shows up at a rally somewhere. Also, just want to add to the OP that the driver did say the Dakota was V6.

I like the Sinclair sign. I remember when that gas was sold in my area.
