Spring Trip down to LA and back from Bellingham WA
I'm looking for ideas of where to camp in our 25' Bigfoot on this coming roadtrip. Here's our stops : Portland, Redding, Paterson (SanJose) and end up at Laguna Beach. Then back.
Does anyone have experience with campgrounds along this route?
Please share...thanks!

I travel Seattle to the Bay Area with my Burro a couple times a year. Assuming you're just looking for a one night stop in these locations as I do, then here are some of my favorites along I-5:
Portland - Columbia River RV Park. One of the first exits after entering OR. Very clean and well managed. Full hookups, pull throughs, lots of stores and restaurants nearby. However, Portland area rush-hour traffic is awful so we generally like to get through it and stay south of town. Our most favorite quick and free stop is the safety rest area just south of Wilsonville. Most people don't realize there are 2 huge parking lots with restrooms behind the main area (both south and north bound). Just follow signs to additional parking and you'll find lovely large and quiet lots to do a short overnight stay. Bonus is the big fields where we walk our dogs.
Redding: Our favorite is the Mountain Gate RV Park on the north end of Redding. Very clean, pretty setting in the trees, and set back enough that you avoid freeway noise.
Patterson: Only time I was there I did a short overnight at Kit Fox RV Park. As I recall it was a little pricey and a rather barren setting but did the trick. There's not much around there.
Enjoy your travels!

I didn't visit the campground, but Pinnacles National Park is worth a stop. There is an east entrance and a west entrance, and they don't connect by road. Campground is on the east side. We made a day visit from the west. The west entrance is not recommended for larger RVs. Beautiful hiking trails!

ALL freeway rest stops in Oregon can be camped in overnight. WA rest stops also, and also CA, but OR has the longest legal stays. In fact, seems like we see people who have set up permanent dwellings in the back lots, chairs, BBQs, clotheslines, and they're out front panhandling...quite a circus. But free!
BEST!
Happy trails.

I see your from BC, I'm not against free but remember your running an out of country plate down there and I just don't feel too secure in some of those "REST STOPS"
In Portland we have used the Pheasant Ridge RV PK. just south of the 5/205 junction, nice place, too many signs about rules all over the lot though,,,
We have stayed north and south of San Jose in the Napa Valley at the Skyline Wilderness pk. great hiking, and in Gilroy at Gilroy Garlic USA RV PK, nice pk but fultimers in it is growing and ruining eye appeal.
When we travel through Redding we stay at the Redding RV PK but maybe a bit hilly for a 25 fter.
We spend a couple 3 months in SoCal at Paradise By The Sea RV in Oceanside, a little south of Laguna but IMO worth the drive.

The Indian Casino's offer some other options from free dry camping to full hookup camping. Close to the freeway and easy access. Lots of choices. Seven Feathers in Canyonville at exit 99 in Oregon is a favorite.

If you are going down I-5 I have stayed at Buena Vista Regional park near Taft/Bakersfield. This a few miles from the start of the Grapevine Grade headed south. I like this location because it is a good jumping off point to get me into LA mid day, so I miss the rush hour. They have electrical and water and a dump station, and it is lake front. I agee with this one. It's a beautiful park with lots of space between sites. We stopped there a year ago on our way back from Arizona and will definitely stop there again when we are in the atea.

:because the City Ordinance says NO Overnight Parking even if given okay by the store.
But I did park in that parking lot twice once in 2009 I parked in the Employee section with my Class B raised roof no interference all night long, 2nd time in my 1963 Studebaker Champ 3/4 ton Pickup, we were sleeping in the back and again I parked in the Employee parking section and no problem from security.
Security guy was a little upset when I got out of the back and into the front of cab, I just said were going to be on the road now and thanks for the spot and hit the road.

: large cities they get more expensive to pull into if your a ways away from large cities they are much cheaper with same experience as others.
Same goes for Motel 6 they operate on same factor as we could not find a campground in San Fran late one night and found Motel 6 cost us near $100.oo but we were happy we found the place so we could sleep, plus restaurant across street had good cheap food.
