Steamed Crabs - Need Idea

Heading for Ocracoke (Outer Banks) in a little over a week and planning on how to cook all the crabs I am going to catch. I want to cook them outside.

I have been doing some experimenting with my Cobb grill. I have a 6 qt pot that will sit on the Cobb frying pan. If I put boiling water from the stove into the pan, it takes about 5 minutes on the Cobb to bring it back to boiling. That was with 2 quarts of water which is a depth of about 2" (depth for steaming). I ran another test where I put 1 qt of tap water into the boiling water and it took 20 minutes to bring it back to a boil. I was trying to simulate adding crabs to the boiling water.

Based on this, I think my best plan is to steam the crabs and not boil them. The diameter of the pot is 9". I might only able to steam 3 or 4 crabs at a time, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Now here's the question. What can I use as a steamer basket?

Note: I made use of the hot Cobb grill by grilling some cubed steaks and onions.

Grew up in MD... Definitely steam, never boil. We just put folded chicken wire in the bottom of the biggest pot we had. Bring on the Old Bay!

No water, steam them with a can of beer and cover with Old Bay.

The only Zatarain's products I've seen up here are their boxed dried rice dish packages. Haven't seen any of their spices.

I would chime in, but I am such a bad cook that I don't know the recipe for steam....

I thought you could only use Zatarain's for Louisiana crabs and shrimp. East Coast you have to use Old Bay, it's the rule.

That's the plan. One beer in the pot and one in my hand!

Steamed Jimmies, lot's of Old Bay Seasoning, sitting on the ground and eaten over newspapers spread over the lawn to catch the mess. It doesn't get any better than that!
