I'm guessin they mean the support poles are steel as opposed to aluminum ones

The real problem with those is not the steel poles, but the plastic connectors at the corners and peak.

Another problem is the fabric is stiff and hard to manage.

As is usual, you get what you pay for.

Click on the picture, and enlarge it. You can see the sissor type frame inside. These are like the "First-up" brand that has the frame in one assembly, and unfolds into the frame work to support the fabric, ... then raise the legs to the full height.
