Straw.....
Camped in northern Michigan this week. One night in Traverse City, one in Petoskey, two in Harrisville.
In Harrisville (beautiful park on Lake Huron) I noticed several people had scattered straw all around their site.
Sites were mostly grass-covered, some with asphalt pads. So what's the straw for and do they rake it up when they leave?

Probably spread over the top of grass seed to keep it from blowing away before the seeds sprout...common here in the south

Yeah, probably the state park employees put down that straw. I have never heard of any reason why campers would carry and use straw. (This must be what debaters mean by a 'straw man argument', lol, just kidding)

Hi: john madill... Maybe it was "The last straw". Sorry I couldn't help myself!!! Maybe due to a lot of rainfall it was put down to help dry the sites out.

You have obviously never camped at Ballards Beach or Champoeg state park in Oregon. Popular locations for camping with the horse crowd.

Hmmmm... I've been in a number of campgrounds with equestrian areas, but none where horses were a allowed in the general camping areas. Could get a bit nasty on a hot day... LOL

Left hay on the Ground??? If RV's left so much as dust when leaving we could get a note from the rangers (LOL)
But, if they left hay behind, I just hope that it wasn't hay that had already been though the horse. LOL - again.

Was it left over from winter? Sometimes campers put straw down to keep the campsite dry when it's snow covered. Not sure if this is popular with RVers, but Scouts love to do it.

As a horse camper for many years, if we put straw or hay down, we always cleaned up before we left the campsite. Most horse campsites are exclusive for the horse people. Miss the horses and the trail riding, now it's trail walking, oh well, life activities change.
