we have a member that used to live in Yellow Knife (Where the Ice Road truckers show was filmed)

He said he would park his rig and be afraid to touch the sides for months.

since small airplanes contain much glass, I suspect it isn't a huge danger. Nothing like being at 10k feet and having your fuselage shatter.

That"s nice and warm! This morning at 5 a.m. it was -42 C 0r -43F in the Upper Laurentians... and not considering windchill. By the way, windchill has no effect on material, only on humans and animals. The wind cools our skin but not my Trillium's... skin.

I never noticed any consequences on my trailer or airplane.

I don't think its so much the cold but the "bump" it may get when cold.
I once saw a guy's entire front end on his brand new Fiero shatter with a slight bumper tap.
Yes, the Fiero dates me, it was in the blizzard of 1979 in Chicago where it was below 0 for a month.

You are so right. It may be -20 with a windchill to -40 but the TEMPERATURE is still only -20. The windchill only factors in when you are trying to heat something, like your exposed skin. Windchill means that with the wind, your skin, or anything else you are trying to heat, is losing heat as if it were -40 without a wind. No matter, it still is darn cold.

Windchill will make a difference in heat transfer, where one is trying to keep a space heated to higher temperature than ambient -- In wind, the skin of the space will lose more heat to the outside world than would be lost in no-wind or low-wind conditions.

I'd been toying with the idea of moving to the east coast in a couple years. I'm thinking I'll stay in California where, when it's 28 degrees early in the morning, no one can stop talking about how cold it is.

Beside the point, but it might have been a Firebird you saw shatter. By '79, they had a big plastic schnozz. The Fiero came out in '84, with a better plastic they named EnduraFlex.

Point taken, though, and even though I was only 9 and only seeing it on the news, [b]even I remember that blizzard! Here, where a 1/4" of snow can shut down a city, it would have been our DREAM - no school for weeks, and tunnels through the snow! Sometimes in March or April, we'll get a nor'easter and a foot of snow, but it's usually gone in 36 hours, and it'll be 60 or 70 degrees right after that.

It's been four years since the daytime temperature here failed to climb above freezing, and tomorrow will break that run. Tonight will be below 20 F, and tomorrow's high lower than 30, and tomorrow night around 10. I don't winterize the Casita, so I've got the heat set about 65, and the cabinets and bathroom open so the heat can reach the pipes. I emptied the waste tanks earlier today, when it was still above freezing.

I lived one winter in Detroit about 20 years ago, but it was a mild one, so I am not at all as hardy as you folks experiencing the crazy temperatures. I was almost a teenager before I realized that temperature could go below zero!

For all of you up there during this Clipper, please stay safe and warm, and look forward to spring!

Palmer maybe you're right, things that far back do get a little fuzzy sometimes. And it was just a million pieces all over the only lane that was open on the street. Yes one lane for traffic in both directions. Grrrrrr It took hours to go about 8 miles.
I just glanced at the car because the owner was standing next to the wreckage crying ( a guy). I felt pretty bad for him.

Joez , She doesn't think she caused it does she? Too bad it wasn't a better trip she may have really liked traveling that way.
