Support Missing?
In looking at some pictures of a Scamp's interior, I noticed most of them have a couple of twisted metal supports(?) that run from the upper cabinet to the lower one (usually on the dinette side). Do these serve a purpose? I have some across some pictures where someone cut them off halfway and attached the bottom half to the vent hood over the stove....using what is now turned into brackets to hang a shelf over the sink. IF those two pieces of metal are truly supports, how does having them essentially "disabled" affect the structural integrity?

This is why some modifications are not too good and can lead to potential issues.

The spiraled steel bars do act as roof supports. I didn't care for the appearance of the spirals, so substituted an aluminum tube support to carry the loads. It gives it a contemporary clean look and has more support.

They sure do serve a purpose! Here is a photo of what can happen when one removes them and the roof takes on a weight load. Not a Scamp but the same principle.

That looks great but there are two serious problems structurally with it.
One is the removal of the two supports from the end of the counter - they despite what some may think are holding the roof up. Secondly the overhead cabinets are not designed to take a lot of weight - so adding a shelf and putting something large onto the shelf could result in fiberglass being stressed and cracking around the rivets that are holding up the cabinets.

I sure wouldnt take a trailer off my shopping list for that reason only! They are a pretty easy cheap item to add back into it.

Mine was missing the supports and I added a couple wooden dowels with chrome squart tubing (towel rack rods) over them. I then added a chrome key rack and 3 small wire drawers from Office Max between the supports. Pictures of my mods are posted in my profile info.

The good news is that it will be easy to see if it has. Not something that will hidden under anything. Just take a step ladder and take a look around the rivets on the roof.
Donna do you happen to have the photo of the Scamp you posted the other day on another thread that had the roof cave in due to snow load for those who may think it cant happen on a Scamp as they are built better than a Boler!

Before everyone goes too crazy,my 2001 16'Side Dinette did not have any supports from the factory.
I called and talked to them about it at some length and was told that they are not really needed and there would be no issue from it. Some just don't like them and the way they looked.
That explanation does not entirely make sense to me but that particular unit was made without them and I have seen others too with no real rhyme or reason behind it?
Maybe with no roof air they are not needed?
Anyway just to cloud the issue further do not be so sure that they were removed.

The reason I placed supports that were missing, is because the roof was showing a depression in it where the support should have been, and this is only a 13' Scamp. The depression was gone after the support was inserted.

Ed did your 16' have roof AC? wondered if it could be that the ones they build up roof at the factory to support an roof AC dont need it.

No mine didn't but I also asked Scamp if that was the reason and they said no?
On the other hand I also asked Scamp questions and got bizarre answers about a lot of other things too?
The fact that I don't see any place where it looks like Cricketts pictured unit had the supports removed from suggest to me that it did not have them?
Crickett, are there obvious points where it seems the supports were attached before? They are not concealed in any way normally.
Isn't this unit you are looking at an '05 too?
A quick call to Scamp on Monday and you too can be even more confused!
