Go to Barnes & Noble and purchase a copy of Sky and Telescope as well as Astronomy magazine. Perhaps a book about astronomy appropriate to their age group. That should orient them and you some. Telescopes can be complicated and frustrating for a kid. Also the "225 x" is a marketing ploy. The image in that scope at that power will be very poor. Going that high requires a very expensive scope with an expensive eyepiece and very dark, clear seeing conditions. Go to Astronomics.com and browse their merchandise. Also a call to their sales staff with the parameters you mention above will get you some excellent free advise. They want to see this succeed in hopes of a lot more future sales as the kids advance. They sponsor a web site called cloudynights.com It has a wealth of interesting articles, reviews and classified ads. .

Great ideas for viewing the night sky. Along those lines you might want to check out the International Dark Sky Association. They have info on the best places for stargazing and of course how to reduce light pollution and save energy.

About IDA

'IDA is the recognized authority on light pollution. Founded in 1988, IDA is the first organization to call attention to the hazards of light pollution, and in 24 years of operation our accomplishments have been tremendous.

We promote one simple idea: light what you need, when you need it. We know some light at night is necessary for safety and recreation. We work with manufacturers, planners, legislators, and citizens to provide energy efficient options that direct the light where you want it to go, not uselessly up into the sky.'
