OK, tell us a bit about those guys. What are they made of, wood? If wood, did you carve them?
Wondering minds want to know.

I like to do a little wood carving and these are the latest ones . The dogs are real easy. They take abaot 1.2 hour to rough out and a little longer to paint. Here's BIG BILL and THE BOYZ

The dogs were made from some old recycled redwood fence boards. The mule was a window frame. The stuff's all over. there's shelves of it, and I've got the nicks to prove it

Those are very neat!
How does one get started woodcarving? Just pick up a knife and wood and pray to still have 10 fingers left? It's something I would like to try doing.

There's probably a carving club somewhere close to you. I suggest that you go here (http://www.chipchats.org). Click on "more Info". There's a link where you can ask for information on clubs in your area.
Go to one the local club's meetings. I've never know any to be anything but totally open to anybody that wants to drop in. Most carvers would love to have the opertunity to teach new comers to the hobbie. You'll find them a lot like this group, warm and friendly.

Some years ago I was given a book by Rick Butz. Also look for Tom Wolfe . He takes you thru a step at a time. Do a search for woodcarving books. Get a kevlar fishing glove.

Exceptional stuff! Well done.
Some years back I ventured into carving and got a lot of enjoyment from it. I never thought of doing these miniatures. They sure would make a hobby that compliments our trailers.
Here is some of the stuff I did.

Ya!!! The used of a kevlar glove can't be stressed enough. I also use a leather thumb gard.
The kevlar glove is used on your non-knife hand. The thumb gard is used on your knife hand. Rick Butz is good, Tom Wolfe has lots of books, often refered to as "carving of the month books". The very best books on carving were written by E.J. Tangeman. They're now out of print and his been gone for a few years now. I've found a couple of his books at book rummage sales and thrift stores.
Like I said it's a great activity. Now combining that with our little trailers, sitting around the camp fire and carving while chatting with family and friends, it just don't get any better than that.

What a great idea! I've been coming up with ideas for things we can do around the campsite for fun after a day of hiking. This sounds really relaxing. I love the little figurines you guys have made.
The question is, will I actually carve something so that it looks like something other than a piece of dead wood? You guys make it look so easy! I once took a sclupture class, and one of our activities was to carve a sculpture with a drill. Mine looked like a hunk of Swiss cheese in the end.

Ken-
Ilove the birds, and the outdoor shots make for a whole new set of ideas. The only woodburning I've done is to paddles i've made and then painted. Here's a few.

Nice looking paddles. I've been getting more and more into NW Indian art. I'm working a pin design of NW Indian fox.

My daughter has been wanting to start whittling. A friend, a woodcarver, had suggested the glove and thumb gaurd, but you folks have supplied the name of a good starter book. Thanks for all the suggestions. Im going to have her read this thread!
