the scenic route 88

If you want to see some most stunning vistas, take route 88 out of Apache Juncton AZ to Roosivelt lake. This is a premo trip but be aware that the last 21 miles are dirt road. We had some washboarding in places, but didnt find it all that bad.

I would probably avoid the dirt road part if it ws Rainng. Heck, it's worth it even if you go the paved part and turn around and go back.

Last time I drove that road was with a now deceased uncle, on our way to go fishing! We stopped for a quick rest and my uncle took of his sweatshirt and stuffed it into the luggage rack on the roof of my VW baja bug. It was a warm summer night. Later down that washboard section I kept seeing a flickering light behind me. Was it aliens??? Then I realized the light was my engine on fire!! I slammed on the brakes and ran back to find my uncle's sweatshirt blown down on the exhaust and burning. I yanked it out before I thought and burned my hand pretty good, but the engine was saved, my hand eventually healed, and we caught a bunch of fish .

Soooooo, yep, I remember route 88

It's a nice drive all right, but IMO the hike up Siphon Draw in the nearby Lost Dutchman SP is way better than any drive. It's a great area there, well worth a visit for anyone thinking of traveling around Arizona.
