Thanks, Tom! I figure it will be a combo of both trying to keep the dogs cool in the camper and hiring someone to look after them. They are little and old and certainly could not hold their own against the street-savvy dogs of Mexico. Is there anything one can do to try to keep the camper cool in a hot environment?

Either park it in the shade, or put up some kind of shade awning over it...wonder if misters on the outside of the trailer would help cool it off?

Good idea. Some kind of a fly type cover would help a lot. Maybe a powered vent, too.

A white roof will help for a start

Perhaps also a canopy over / or "sail" to add shade. That may depend on where you are camped.

You might want to post a photo of the exact area to be sealed, but my initial guess would be butyl tape.

Is it just my poor eyesight, or does this trailer look like there is some kind of sag or damage happening along the roof line at the door? Maybe a close-up photo from the side looking at the door would show everything is fine.

If your rear door swings up inside you may be able to attach via snaps an "Add-a-Room" tent or awning they make for toy haulers which traditionally have rear opening doors. Here are some pictures of one I had where my rear door swinged down.

Thank you, Jim, for the pics of the porch situation! We still haven't gotten our back door open but it is high on the list. We got the whole thing gutted pretty well and weighed. It weighed 1800 lbs; considerably more than I expected. I took it into my usual mechanic and he said that the frame had been (poorly)repaired with heavier-than-necessary metal bars welded in. Fortunately, it is stable and does not need to be repaired further but the added weight is a bummer. We will be removing the bumper/shelf contraption off the back and that will take off some weight.

The roof is bowed near the back and we will have to install some support (rafter/joist across the back with some support around the door). My mechanic recommended aluminum for strength and its light weight. After the structural integrity is regained, we will fix the side door. So much work ahead of us!

I am definitely going to look into a sail or canopy. Thank you for the advice!

I would say "looking good", but.... Well progress is good. I am really curious about the final floor plan. I always pictured a dinette up front under the windshield. Might get kinda hot though.

Maybe you could spray polyurethane insulation on the ceiling, then add a piece of paneling or whatever to cover up and give a finished look. But even that probably would only delay the heat-up inside by a couple hours.

Thanks, everyone! I am thinking about paneling the ceiling and walls. I am hoping that we will be able to open up that back door and that there may be away of making it secure and airy. I have a lot on my plate, on a tight budget, and expect to be on the road by the 1st of May.

The floor plan won't include a dinette or cooking facilities but it will have a big bed, lots of storage and a table/desk area. It will only be myself and the furry little friends. I can't seem to find where the good floor plans are online, or good sites with creative storage ideas. Any advice?

Rachel, if you were to put up a dimentioned diagram, complete with door, window, wheel well, and any other pertinent components shown, I bet you could get lots of ideas for layouts from the folks here.

Maybe do up a list of must haves, as well as a few things you might like to have now or in the future that are not critical.
