The wife and I drug out into the Hills this weekend, only to find our reservation "superceded" by a wedding party
Decided to run over to another campsite, "which was 40 miles away, by way of the regular highway, but there WAS this shortcut road."





We are really getting attached to this thing, sure is nice not having to set up a tent every night, and Herself is just in love with the whole indoor kitchen thing

Gotta go and clean everything out, now.

See if I can get this straight: behind you is a cop escorting a woman about to have a baby on the way to the only hospital for 230 miles. You got out to take a picture of you rig, figured since you threw a rod in there you might as well document it. Am I getting warm?

Nope, behind me is about 10 miles of deserted road.
In front is my wife w/ the camera, who had to go first and clear the path, per law and custom for this road (that's one of about 8 single lane tunnels, though this is the longest of the bunch.)
Last mechanical issue we had was caused by a suicidal ground squirrel, and that took about 3 minutes to fix.

Jeff- It's SD state highway 87, AKA The Needles Highway, in the beautiful Black Hills. To really enjoy it, you've got to hit it either in March or October. Any time warmer, and it's full of tourists, anytime colder, and you need to have a snowcat to clear it.

That picture was taken ~ 6:45 AM, hence the light traffic at the time. If anyone is touring the Black Hills, let me know, I can suggest lots of out of the way state campgrounds.

Edit- I'd suggest a maximum of a 16' trailer, a couple of the tunnels up here have some odd approachs...

We hit this series of tunnels 2 1/2 weeks ago while motorcycle week was on, they said there was between 300,000 and 500,000 bikes there, (I think we saw them all but 2) anyway we approached the tunnels from the west and had gone thru one that was as I remember 7'6" wide and 10' 6" high, when we came to the second the approach was a bit hairy and the motorcycles were so numerous they had some folks there with orange vests (I think they were park volunteers) directing traffic to try and speed things up. As we approached one of them ran up to us arms waving and shouting you can't go through here, you won't fit. I looked at the opening size on the entry sign and it said 8' X 12' high and I told her that I'd just come through the one to get here and it was smaller than this, another one of the orange vests ran over and told her that "if he got this far he would also fit here" so I was able to continue. The presidential picture was taken just as we left the last tunnel and had there not been so much traffic we could have walked back and used the end of the tunnel for a picture frame which was what we wanted to do but it just didn't work out.

Having had a Scout II for a while, I'd guess it's either a Travelall or a full-sized pickup.

The simple fact you could ID it as a binder gives you full pardon

Travelall, 1973, 4x4 345 V-8 engine, 5 speed OD transmission, standard 1/2 ton suspension (right now), factory tow package, limited slip rear differential.

Tows the '73 Eco just fine I just have to lift the trailer to tow level...
