Tough Weather

We've chosen to spend another day because of high winds and blowing sand. These sand storms are the closest thing I've seen to a snow white out.

Winds are over 60 mph from the west. Opening and closing the trailer door is truly a job. Semi's are being diverted off the highway and no traffic is being allowed on, at least in one direction.

You can hear the sand pinging off the trailer though mostly it's dust that fills the air.

We have learned that there's absolutely no reason to drive on a day like this. By noon the trailer park we're in, basically an overnite stop, is full of rigs who recognized how difficult driving can be.

Where abouts are you?
I remember a family trip out west where the winds were bad enough that we could see the sides of semi trailers traveling ahead of us on the Interstate.

We're in Deming, NM. I have never felt this rig move so much. We're on three jacks, two tires and the tongue jack and we constantly feel like we're going to blow over.


Some of the big rigs have even pulled their slides in... to keep dust out or maybe concern about twisting.

As much as we would prefer for it not to be windy, it's an interesting experience. At our last stp we drove thru one of these with the car going to visit this or that. The wind defintiely was steering the car.

As strong as the winds are, the scary part is that visibility can instantly go to zero.

We're staying still until we head to Rusty's RV Ranch.

Welcome to springtime in New Mexico - when Arizona blows into New Mexico! We live just outside Albuquerque on a ridge at about 7,000' elevation and 50 mph winds are not unusual. The whole state is in the midst of a windstorm right now but I think it's suppposed to settle down in the next day or so. Hang tight!

Hi,
We had some really high winds yesterday in Palm Springs. Gusts up to 50 mph. Sand blowing everywhere. Our "patio" looked like a bomb had hit it. Took me ages to vacuum out the trailer this morning. But it's all part of the RV life--every day brings something interesting!

We are hanging tight. The small experience of going to lunch in a storm (not blowing when we left) was a great education.

Ginny really doesn't like the wind.

It's sort of like driving the Labrador dirt road. Everyday there was sand in the trailer (though the Scamp is better than the stick built we used for Labrador, there's sand on my keyboard right now.

I was outside for 5 minutes, put my hand in my pocket and felt sand.

I will say it's amazing, not like our noreasters or hurricanes but not unlike them either.

Sometimes the roads between Las Cruces and El Paso are closed off because there are clouds of brown dirt in the air. I don't think it's sand--just dirt and dust. This is one reason Valley Fever is a problem in these areas, as it is a soil borne fungus that blows on the wind.
