traveling with a rifle

I want to travel with my .22 cal rifle thru the USA. I've been given a preponderance of advice. I will appreciate comments from anyone who is trailering the states regarding their experiences. I'm concerned about meeting a "Barnie Fife' somewhere who may ruin my day.

If I were doing it, I would keep it unloaded, in a case and hidden in the camper and the bullets hid somewhere else.

You have the legal right to carry a properly prepared and legal weapon thru any state as long as you are traveling thru the state, per federal law. You can stop for the night, but not spend extended time in some states. Check with the NRA. They have info on carrying weapons legally.

There are different definitions to understand. Carrying and transporting may have different meanings in different states.


Transporting is a much more politically correct word.


Indian Reservations are sovereign nations with different rules.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I will be using a locked box for rifle with a separate one for ammo stowed away from location of rifle. My worry is that I may encounter authorities who interpret the law wrong.

There's always some risk of running into a yahoo. But the risk is very low; most LEOs are professional and know their business. Remember you don't have to volunteer any info or make any admissions, and they need probable cause to search when you don't give them permission.

I'm retired from a long career in Law Enforcement.
I'd leave it home, as a Yahoo isn't going to give you time to go unlock the case and load the weapon.
Besides, if some one is drugged up your going to have to hit him in a vital spot to put him down immediately as a .22 will only pi$$ him of if you don't.
It's also very unwieldy in your soon to be Scamp.
If you're proficient with a hand gun that would be better than a long gun.
Personally, I think you would be better off buying some pepper spray.
I camp in bear country so I have a large container of bear spray.


In all my years of camping the only time I was bothered by Yahoos was Lake Shasta 25 years ago.
They were all college kids getting drunk and singing all night.


I've never had anything stolen or been bothered by anyone other than the drunk singers.


CW, I hope you have as much enjoyment from your new Scamp as I've had over the years.

Though bothersome, this is innocent fun.

We still do the same thing, sitting around campfires, playing guitar, and singing songs. However, we only do this where our group is the only one camping. Those that go to bed earlier still say they are not bothered by it. We don't play all night though, and a music player usually gets used, at a reasonable volume.

Safe on all accounts. Our guitar playing is never hard rock of any kind, though there is some good rock 'n roll mixed in with many other genres in our recorded tunes.

And yes, even though no newer Ossie, I do have a few of the Black Sabbath songs I listened to as a teen, that get played once in a blue moon.

Just don't take your rifle into Canada. In the US your trailer is considered your home. Best to keep it unloaded or without a round in the chamber.
You can get an apt for your phone that lists all the gun laws for all states.

You can take a "long gun" (rifle or shotgun) into Canada as long as it's not fully automatic. You have to do some paperwork and pay a fee $25. Handguns are prohibited but your beautiful Henry is perfectly legal.
