Steve, I have done some backpacking up there. I have also stayed right in the state park at "Union Bay Campground". I liked it because I could be right on the water. If you backpack or hike I would recommend going to "Lake of the Clouds". There are many other good hikes in the area of a variety of lengths and difficulty. The time for fall
colors varies and you have to get closer to it to know it with any precision. My only comment on going up there is that I usually wish I had more time.
Be aware that in certain conditions and times of the year, the bugs can be truly nasty. I got the distinct feeling they were out to prove that I was not at the top of the food chain anymore. Heads up.
If you have not done Pictured Rocks yet, I would highly recommend it. I hiked the entire 40+ mile shoreline of the park and still think of it fondly. The UP has many great places though so I will avoid getting too far into that discussion.
