Yep, that terminology ranks right up there with "Geezer" and other derogatory terms popular in the last century to describe individuals of a certain age and/or ability and, in 2015, many find them as offensive as the waiter/waitress who addresses customers of a certain age as "You Kids", in hopes of improving their tips.
Although the results of the last "Age" poll were never posted, I don't see any unexpected information. Basically, 85% of the group is over 50, and 60% is over 60, which, except for occasional grandchildren, pretty much rules out the need for including Bounce Houses and Pony Rides at FGRV events.
In short, we are "branding" ourselves to many as being the to-remained-unnamed group in a 1969 western movie starring Walter Bernnan, Chill Wills and Andy Devine.
To counter O-T-D, the phrase "70 is the new 50" fits well.

Abnormal distribution?
This survey does need one or two more bins on the old age end. Why should all those "older than dirt" be lumped together? Those of us just over 70 are very different from those over 80 (much older than dirt) and those over 90 (really much older than dirt), regardless of how many of us are still around. Those who complain about the aphorisms, lighten up, please.
And, as far statistics go, the plot should have the shape of normal distribution - the bell curve more or less, but it does not. The old end is distorted.

I don't see any"Aphorisms" being used in this thread at all.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aphorism
But a lot of euphemisms seem abound when referring those in certain age groups.
i.e. Kids, Geezers, older than dirt etc.... None of which do I appreciate. When a group of individuals are reduced to euphanisms they are, in turn, marginalized.
This is not at all different than the father that, just this past week, objected to his son , who is serving in the military, being referred to as "Boots on the Ground".
And the other point I make is that there are many reasons why the age group on this site will never be represented by a typical bell curve distribution. Our interests, to site another euphemism, are "Age Appropriate". LOL

The only way a term like that could possibly be derogatory, is if that was the intent of the person using it. "Older that dirt" and "Geezer" are expressions I here elderly folks use, way more than young ones, and almost always said light heartedly.

Made one little memory...
We once stopped to buy lunch at a small place by the side of the road somewhere down south. After I paid the cashier for our wonderful pulled pork sandwiches and we were walking out, I said to my dear wife: "Did you notice she called me 'hon'?" She just looked at me and smiled. I did not mind it one bit!

Down here in the lower provinces, I seldom heard them being used publicly except in a derogatory manner, as in "Who's the old Geezer over there" and "That guys older than dirt, what's he doing here". Private discussions, between individuals, is somewhat different.
When those terms are used in general discussion, and on a public forum, it provide license for others as well. It also serves to further brand our membership group in a ageist manner.

Whatever. I am going with the light-hearted, have fun with it approach. It is just my nature to be happy and have fun. Not a geezer yet, and almost well over 10 years younger than dirt.

Oh poo, reminds me of friends who wouldn't join AARP when they turned 50 y/o because they didn't want anyone to know they were that old. Get over it and be grateful. Plenty of folks will NEVER age and would trade places with a Geezer in a short minute.
Now... about that discount

Until this year, I was in the under 50 group. Turning 50 seemed less traumatic then how I remember turning 40 was.
None of us is getting any younger.

Proud to be GEEZER
In the morning when I awake I hang pieces of glass in front of my eyes the better to see you. I stick tiny radio receivers in my ears the better to hear what you say. Then stuff a couple of appliances in my mouth the better to chew my food and before I go outside I cover my head to shade the top where I used to have hair to do the same job. With my morning coffee I take one For cholesterol, one for heart two for the arthritis and something else because the doc says I must. For better balance I now carry a stout rod.
......and I'm doing better than a lot of others in their late seventies and more....
I read about my old school buddies in the obits and cherish my grand kids more.
Life is fantastic and I look forward to tomorrow. Hope you do too.
Jim
