V6 versus v8 hauling 16' scamp

I towed a 16 Scamp with a 2002 V6 escape with little problems, sometimes slow on long hills but able to keep up and get 17 to 19 mpg. My wife fell in love with a 2009 Avalanche with big V8, better ride, and 17 to 20 mpg, both driven at 65 mph. Would not have believed it if I had been told this, without towing there is a big difference in mpg, it is nice to have the larger roomer TV. I realize these are not Toyotas, but a V8 can still get mpg if you drive easy.
