I wonder if it started life as a cargo trailer?

I would say yes. Looks to be similar to one of these cargo trailers converted.

They come in sizes from small to large to very large.

Sure looks like a converted cargo trailer--we went and looked at a number of them considering starting from scratch...they can be heavy. We even considered horse trailers before we decided to go with vintage fiberglass.

When I saw the image I immediately thought of the "Shuttle" by Chariot (link to their site). Then I kept reading at the link above and saw they are in fact "Shuttle" trailers of sorts?

I was close to going that route before purchasing Parkliner #35. BUT what stopped me was that I was unable to find anyone here in Oregon that would insure it and its contents/conversion , (

YMMV,
Thom

It has some similarities in appearance to the Chariot Shuttle, but I don't think it was one. The front end looks smoother and more tapered.

We had a member here years ago, Cathy Mutch, that owned a converted fiberglass cargo trailer, she and her Dad did the work. It was smaller than the one in the top post link. If you're interested in seeing Cathy's, here's a link: Cathy M's Library | Photobucket
