Warning: Beware of large pizza pies
Never one to pass up a good deal ... or a clip-out coupon ... on one of our trips down out of the mountains, I picked up the local "Shopper" newspaper that lots of places give out free.

I was overjoyed to find a $3 off a large pizza coupon, which I quickly cut out and ran to find my wife.

"Pam," I yelled. "I found a $3 coupon! Let's get pizza after you're done and take it back up the mountain!" (I had left her in the laundramat, sweating over hot linty clothing, so I thought I'd spoil her).

We had to drive across town to find the pizza place ... but hey, I had a coupon!

"The coupon's only good on the large," the Pizza guy said.

"Which pizza's your large?" I asked.

Instead of answering, he just pointed to a wall display of about 6 pizza pans ... one of which was the size of a wagon wheel.

"Is the large the middle pan?" I asked, because surely the wagon-wheel sized pan was the extra large ... or maybe even the extra, extra large. The el-grando (in Texas).

"Nope large is the largest one." He said, with pizza dough and flour flying.

"How big is that?"

"20 inches"

Well, since I had a $3 coupon, I decided to splurge.

Pam and I could eat to our heart's content and still have enough left for a couple of lunches.

Pam thought it was too big. But, hey, as I said. I had a coupon.

After it was cooked, the pizza guy slid our large pie into a sturdy cardboard box, that was probably 22 or 23 inches across, so it could hold the large pizza.

When we got back to the campsite, as is often the case in the mountains in the summer, a thunderstorm broke out, so we raced from the car to the trailer, with Pam carrying the pizza over her head to stay dry.

But guess what?

The pizza box was too wide to fit through the trailer door!

Pam was stuck outside the trailer, in the rain, holding a pizza box, too large to fit through the door.

"Don't tip the box! The pizza will slide all to one side and be all stuck to the box" I yelled out from inside the dry trailer.

Well, I don't want to tell you what Pam said, or did.

But I learned that sometimes, a $3 coupon isn't quite the deal I thought it was.

Also learned that I better measure the trailer door before I suggest to Pam that we bring annother pizza back to the trailer.

Maybe we should just stick with a couple of personal pan pizzas ... I mean, we love camping in tiny trailers!

Why can't I settle for a small pizza?

Well, for one thing, they don't usually have clip-out coupons for small pizzas.

Yeah, here all I was trying to do was spoil my wife and what do I get in return?

Her suggestion that I perform an unnatural act with a 20 inch pizza pie!

I mean, have you ever tipped a boxed pizza up on its side? The cheese gets all stuck to the box top ... and the sauce kinda slides off to the side.

She could have stood outside, and handed the pizza in, piece by piece.

But, nooooooo. It all had to come in, in one fell swoop.

Like I have any control over the width of the door on my trailer!

In a previous life, I worked at a pizza joint. I remember one girl (not that her gender mattered, but a girl it was...) who was hired to run deliveries. I pulled the pizza from the oven, sliced it, boxed it, put it in the warming bag, and handed it to her. She tucked it under her arm and headed out the door...

OH MY... I never gave pizza a second thought with my Play-Pac... ran out to measure the door with an old pizza box I had laying around and wouldn't ya know... Didn't fit...

Now why oh why hasn't someone around here thought of this before and come up with a solution? Maybe a mail slot kind of opening, 2 inches high, 24 inches long with a flippy door... with something on the other side to hold the pizza so it doesn't flop on the floor...

Maybe we could fashion some kind of special, FiberglassRV.com window vent (cover), ala the ones that MaxxAir makes for rain... but this one, of course, would be horizontal instead of vertical, for pizza pies.

A small pizza delivery window slot, preferably in the front of the trailer - where the dinette usually sits. Make it rainproof, make it dustproof, and definitely make it PAM-Proof!

The ultimate solution
Actually, the solution is not to sacrifice the integrity of your fiberglass RV, but to make your own pizza.

Each trailer should be equipped with a pizza oven. I like the ones the Italians use; it's an igloo shaped stone oven with a wood fire in the bottom. You'd need to center it above the axle(s) to avoid unbalancing the trailer.

This solves all the problems with large pizza boxes.

While avoiding the unbalanced trailer is a nice thought, I'm just wondering how our little glass houses would stand up to A) the what, 3 or 4 tons a stone pizza oven weighs and the 900 degree heat generated by it...

All you had to do was to order the pizza to eat there. Then ask for a couple of take home smaller boxes. Then just repackage the pizza.

Isn't hind site great.

Dang, Ron. I wish I'd thought of that! We've ordered pizza on the road a bunch of times ... even had it delivered to the trailer a couple of times (...hello, could you deliver a large sausage pizza to Bubba's Trailer Park, site 46?).

This was the first time (in my life, I think) that I encountered a 20 inch pizza ... well, one that the pizza place considered just their "large."

Nathan ... I didn't know that fancy convention oven of yours could bake a pizza! I knew, from personal experience, that it makes one heck of a T-bone steak.

Does this mean next time we meet up, I'm getting pizza instead of steak?

probably not...
I think that T-Bone steak is *always* in order in preference over pizza. Since Daisy is gluten intolerant and we're both allergic to dairy pizza is low on the priority list...

unless, of course, you want a gluten free pizza crust with sheep and goat cheese .

But, nah, a couple of 1 pound porterhouse or tbone steaks are better :-)
