I just heard that the thurston county parks are closing and this will include Millersylvania state park just off of I-5 between Centralia and Olympia. From what I am hearing they will close May 31! I have reservations for July 4th so will have to call to try to get into another park or get a refund...
How sad this park is being targeted for one of the closures.. they get alot of HWY traffic and the Learning Center is there for school kids to come and learn about things.
Nice swimming and boating.. Another family affair has gone. Times I have been there many familys tent camping, or with their trailers... kids all over the place, having a good time... ( not that i like to go when its so crowded) Its close to me (20 min away) I have always enjoyed this park and will miss not being able to go there short camping days.
Rainbow Park and Lewis and Clark are also scheduled to close also...
If there is a change in Millersylvania I will update but I have my doubts...

There is some action underway to transfer the two state parks on Bainbridge Island (Fay Bainbridge SP has camping; Ft Ward doesn't) to the City of Bainbridge Island, but it's not a done deal.

Sounds like Snohomish County is making plans to take over Wenberg SP.

We stayed at Millersylvania last summer (cause all our years of driving up and down I-5 I LOVED the name!!!)
We were just there one night and would love to be able to go there again--glad it is not closing....

Advocacy is very important. Fort Flagler, Old Fort Townsend, and Bogachiel State Park on the coast are all slated to be closed, that's three just on the Olympic Peninsula, and they are also considering moth balling Fort Worden for a short time. This closing of parks at a time when more families are looking for economical ways to recreate and more people are retiring and traveling is an absurd.

Here is a very excellant editorial from the Seattle Times which suggests many good alternatives. Washington State Parks Closing

I encourage any of you who value state parks in Washington state to read this and then write to your legislature and the governor. Those who use the parks need to speak up.
