Water filter question.

I don't buy bottled water and I don't drink the water from my water tank in my Casita trailer.
What would be a good portable water filter, to fill up a 5 gal water jug?

We purchase drink sized bottled water, freeze it then put the frozen bottles in the fridge to assist it in keeping cold then have cold water to drink.

There are a lot of backpacking water filters that are small and light weight.. But the ones I've always used are had pumped- so it would take a while and some elbow grease to fill up 5 gallons. Maybe try the above mentioned frozen water bottles, but with non-disposable bottles? (if going green is your concern)

Kevin there are a number of in line water filters you can attach directly to a water hose. I have seen them used a lot but I cant help you as to how well they work or dont.

I have a backpackers filter which I use when Kayaking but as has been mentioned they are very slow.

I normally start out my trip by freezing large water containers at home and use them in the cooler instead of ice blocks and then use them as drinking water. Once thats all used up some of the big grocery store chains have water stations where you can refill your own containers with water for a small fee.

Inline one's are pretty easy if you have a threaded outlet. We use this one and it's worked well so far: TastePURE KDF/Carbon Water Filter - Camco RV 40043 - Water Filtration - Camping World

If you don't have a threaded outlet, you may want to use a reusable filtered pitcher like these: Water Filter Pitchers & Dispensers | PUR My mother-in-law uses one of these at her house all the time and swears by it for keeping filtered water cold in her fridge.

I know there are also reusable water bottles that have individual filters too. But I'd probably just use the larger pitchers to fill a small bottle.

I have a Katadyne backpacker filter but hand pumping isn't ideal for large amounts of water.

There are gravity feed vs pump type backpackers water filter systems available. The biggest one I have seen though is 4 liters and its made by Platypus and not cheap. The link is to MEC which is the Canadian equivalent of REI who usually sell many of the same products.
