We have seen improper towing, but improper hauling?

All I can say is Really?

Other than I think this quote covers it.......

"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and consciencious stupidity."

True... The US roof rack limit is 150 pounds, but in Europe it is 8,000 pounds.

You guys might appreciate the Mercedes I used to have with an (aluminium) folding hard top that had the factory roof rack system. As well as the two transverse roof bars, it had two longitudinal bars that ran from the front of the trunk opening to the top of the screen so that none of the weight was carried on the roof.

As a result it was possible to use the rack with the roof down - though you had to be sure of the weather, as you couldn't put the roof back up with the rack in place. Here it is carrying a yacht's spinnaker pole, thoguh I did once stack about a foot and half thickness of 8x4 foam insulation sheets on it, which looked a lot more like the Jetta shown above (minus the suspension collapse, obviously). I think the rated capacity was 50kg (110lb) though I'm sure the only reason it existed was so that Germans could carry their skis to the Alps.

I just lot any faith I had in Mythbusters. In the original story the tires blew and the car wasn't able to drive away. The concrete was mostly in the trunk which is a whole lot different than over the axle. No bracing in the inside.

Yeah, the load in the picture seems to have slid back and the centre of gravity of the load is behind the wheels. The front wheels look like they are about to become airborne. But all they did is load it better. Still amazing that the roof did not collapse.

In both cases it's European cars so the load rating must be higher than that published in the US.

Heck, yes. That's how most cars are loaded when they leave our home improvement stores over here in Yurp.....

I want to know what string the Mythbusters were using, as that seems to be the key to successful overloading.
