What "essential" items turn out to be non-essential?

As others had said whats essential or not depends on where you camp or your style of camping. For me leaving home without the gas bbq wouldnt work out well at all when camping in the summer months on the west coast. Due to high fire hazard risks in our forests, wood campfires are often banned for a better part of camping season.
