What would you buy?

Let's assume you have a 25k (Canadian) budget what would you buy?

I like modern clean lines and a brown trailer is just not something I can live with. I originally thought buying an older Trillium would be a good idea but paying someone to refinish it is turning out to be more expensive than expected. Another major issue is we can't find insurance for it because of the age.

Not really interested in spending 15k on something I can't insure and doesn't have AC

So if you had my budget what would you buy?

Keep in mind I'm in Canada (Ottawa) and would prefer to buy something available in Canada.

I'd find the best BigFoot I could buy for about $22,500 CDN and use the remaining $2500 for what ever minor fixing, new tires, outfitting etc it might need.


Of course this is with the assumption that you already have an appropriate tow vehicle.

Really surprised about the insurance. Called my agent, told them what I had (76 Trillium 1300), they asked me the price I paid, got theft and liability and everything for less than $130 a year.

Is the trailer brown inside?? Don't worry about what the outside looks like right away. Use the trailer a while and see if it fits your needs before rushing out to buy something else. See if you like the size and the towing and the 'feel' of that size of trailer. I saw lots of trailers at the RV show in Toronto that were smaller sized and less than $25000 brand new.

I'm a bit bias, but I'd sure take a good look at an Escape 17B...

Did you want used or new ? As Bob suggested, a used Bigfoot would be an excellent choice. As John suggested an Escape would be in your budget and you could probably get a new unit and stay within your budget. Personally, I would probably go used and get more trailer for the money but having a new trailer is very appealing also.

$25,000 is huge when looking at the current CDN/US rates. I'd definitely be looking at Escape or maybe a new Bigfoot (from the factory), as long as I got the layout (ETC) that I wanted.

I didn't spend much more than that (US funds) for Ten Forward... and my 5.0TA is worth THAT and more to me. YMMV

The biggest issue is the tow vehicle . We have a 2012 VW Tiguan. We are open to upgrading (we had a pilot before this one) but we have a difficult time wanting to change it for a less fuel efficient model.

We love our Tiguan, the handling and the moon roof

All else being equal we'd love to be able to pull a trailer with this vehicle.

I can't even begin to tell someone what their tug should be. I purchased a new tug to pull the trailer I wanted NOW. I figured the trailer is forever, the tug... not so much.

New BigFoot trailer MSRP prices could knock off a Canucks Mucklucks.

I couldn't find a price at any Canadian dealers, but here are some prices at a U.S. dealership. Even though the MSRP of $46078 USD is discounted to $36,863 USD, for a 17.5"er that is almost twice his $25,000 CDN budget. OUCH!!!

And to be honest the big foots are too brown for my liking. I swear trailer designers are blind!!!

Ooops... I just read post #8. Isn't the 2012 Tiguans towing limit around 2200 lbs?

Yes it 2250lbs with a braked trailer! 1500lbs without.

And don't worry about the Brown on BigFoot trailers, they are all to heavy.

Sounds as if you are looking for a white moulded fiberglass interior. Have you thought of doubling your budget and going for an Oliver?

Think it best you select the trailer you desire first and then get the tow vehicle that is capable of safely and comfortably towing it.

You can get a great used Escape or new Scamp fifth wheel for that budget. In fact, it would allow for a bit of a decorating budget if you chose a used Scamp but check out your tow weights in the real world article to ensure you have the power.

You sound like you will want to have that cushion of $$ to really make your RV feel like home! A bit of new custom flooring, paint, or really beautiful fabric on the cushions will make your RV the castle you want it to be. Ask me how I know.....planning my redo on our new to us baby even as we speak!

Good day Mom2philip.. I would double check your numbers. There is sometimes confusion with lbs and kg's. Is the rating 2,250 in lbs or kg's???
