Good for you, Robin! Facilitating your husband's fishing trip was a great thing. (Finding a surrogate facilitator for next time is also cool.)

Check out Charles Watts' Winter Camping article in the nav bar on the left side of this page, right above the Buyers Check List. He doesn't login here much anymore (too busy camping?) but he's a great advocate of winter camping (albeit with an electrical hookup). I think his article addresses some of your concerns.

Winter? We camped in a tent at Bryce Canyon Utah in the middle of July and it got down to 25!

Of course the elevation is 7000'.
