Cindy,

To me, the Backbone State Park lake seemed to be in decent shape. It looked like there were some repairs done around it, e.g. fresh concrete on the parking lot. Apparently the park got flooded a year ago, that is what my Iowan friend told me. Yes, this park is wonderful, and we certainly shall be back. We already started on planning a full week of camping there next year. Hopefully by then I will have a nice fiberglass egg, possibly a Canadian 15'B or 17'B.... ) Then the rain can come, when it feels like it....

Gerda:

While you are at Backbone, take a canoe or rent one and canoe from Elkader to Motor Mill (This is all near Strawberry Point.). The mill is a beautiful limestone building that you see as you come around a corner in the river. Breathtaking. Of course, that depends on whether or not it floated away on all the flood waters a couple of years ago.
You can either actively canoe or, as we used to do, find a friend, tie up your canoes and float down. There are only a few places you need to untie.

Makes me homesick. We lived there for 15 years.

Hi Gerda,
I entered the egg world with a '74 Boler 13' last June and loved it. It's perfect for a gal and her greyhounds.
Then after reading about Escapes, decided I wanted a bigger egg with more ammenities. My Boler had a very small fridge, and no heater or running water. That made it practically maintanence free, and cozy, but ... I began dreaming about fulltiming some day, and for that I would need more.
I'm one of the VERY fortunate ones who got a used '07 17B Escape. I LOVE it. Some of the upgrades I'm thrilled with (besides the basic quality of an Escape) are:more space, bathroom, bigger fridge, heater, awning, outside shower, more screen windows, and screen door. I also don't want to make up the bed daily. The foldup counter is handy.
It was helpful for me to get my egg-leggs with a 13'. It gave me the confidence to go for a longer trailer. You will be able to handle a 13,15 or 17. I used to be able to push the Boler (off hitch) myself; can't do that with 17B but I'll look into one of those dollys
mentioned.
I'm excited for you entering the fiberglass world!!!!

Hi: Gerda, H... Did you include in your price comparisons the standard Escape awning vs. the optional Casita Awning??? We had a rope and pole awning with our Boler...a definate two person put up!!! The Carefree of Colorado awning with the Escape is a breeze for one to put up. We also have the screen room option that dome snaps to the trailer and feeds into the awning roller to double your living space and keep the bugs at bay!!!

The more I think about it, the more excited I get... About an hour after talking with Tammy on the phone, I already e-mailed her again, telling that I am now pretty much decided on the 17'B, and that picking it up in mid May would be perfect.... That is the time she mentioned the 17' could be delivered to Manitoba, where I could travel more easily. I just know that I will be most happy also long-term with the 17'B, as I see this as a long-term investment. I envision still traveling with it in 20some years.

Yes Alf, I most definitely will get the bug screen room; nice area to be, even if it rains! BTW, you have always very inviting photos on tab! Cannot wait to post my own scenes, but now I just have to order and then wait... Perhaps some tenting scenes for now...

Deb, you lucked out getting a used 17' Escape. Where did you find it? I will get a trailer dolly, most definitely. Was a nice tip of Donna.

An Escape enthisiast/greyhound friend gave me the heads up about it after she saw an ad posted on the escapetrailer website. She knew I was planning to get a new Escape, after the deal on an '08 Escape fell through last minute.
I was the 5th call the seller rec'd after only 4hrs of his ad being posted. Long story just a tad shorter...I drove up to Toronto, he gave me a thorough tour, and I drove off very happy, excited, and a little nervous. I am thrilled with it, and consider myself quite fortunate to have it.
You're wise to consider the long term aspects of chosing the right size. 17B is big enough AND small enough, if you know what I mean.
Isn't Tammy delightful!

Thumbs down

Newest update: I made it official and ordered a 17'B via e-mail to Tammy... I will be able to pick it up mid May 2010 in Manitoba. Now I just cannot wait! My gut just told me to go with Escape! For some reason! And my gut also tells me that I am making some friends among the fiberglass fans!

Now I got to work, somehow.... I am really excited.

I feel like jumping out of joy as well. Why don't I join in here:

I already got started on planning the trip next year to Canada. My friend is moving to Toronto soon, so probably I am having the trailer delivered to Ontario instead of Manitoba... And she is already now antsy to see my 17'B, as she is hatching a certain idea... It is funny, but just this year I got her into camping.

Deb, I would be also curious to see some pics.

Actually, during the past few days I saw some 17'Bs up for sale, on the Escape forum. However, all too far away from me to look at.

Autsch, Donna! Don't remind me how far my retirement is still away... Still busy with work for at least 25 years, oops... We will use the weekends to escape...
