WiFi Antennae

My wife has purchased a WOW computer for seniors.
I've had to "try" to show her how to navigate around in it
for the last two days. She has her own e-mail account and
skype and facebook. Now she'll quit getting on to me for the
time I spend traveling the world via internet.........lol.

A magazine came in the package........well, more of a mail order
catalog (it's called firstSTREET for Boomers and Beyond)............
in it is a WiFi Antennae advertised for around
$130. It's claim is it can pull in the WiFi signal up to a mile away.

Your thoughts?

A mile? Maybe, maybe not. They're kinda skint with the numbers, like antenna gain, etc. For a few more dollars, I'd get this:

LONG RANGE 802.11N WIFI KIT FOR RVS - USB

Much better build quality, and probably much better performance. I really like their coax cable, especially the 400 flex.

Now that's informative.................
It wouldn't be much good to have an antennae in the window if
you are surrounded by metallic campers. I learn something
every day.

I noticed they sell cantenna supplies........lol

You can make one with a can and a wireless network adapter if it is your intnention of "borrowing" someone's unprotected internet. Mine's made out of a strainer for the camper. Not sure of the range.

I have a wifi router my daughter uses off my internet.
My purpose in studying this is I've read how so many
pull into a RV park to find that the wifi doesn't work unless
you can park right next door to the office.

I was thinking an antennae might boost enough to get the
signal anywhere in a RV park. Just thinking out loud.

bed springs in a tree for television reception.

Yup them where the days! I recall when we would go camping without a phone, computer/ipad or a TV - or a trailer for that matter, now that was real camping!

Kind of miss those days. Now when camping everyone seems to wants to be able to contact you fast. Even if it just my 90 year old mother wanting me to tell her again how to update her Facebook stats or how to send a text to one of her grandchildren who is traveling out of the county

Head over to NewEgg or MicroCenter and check out their offers. Also follow Yelp and Woot... they always have something going.

As to that stuff from "FirstStreet". Their ads make me cringe each time I see them. Over-priced and limited hardware, for starters. If you are willing to get a second-generation set of tools you can pick up Win7 notebooks for under $300. "My <insert relative name in here> isn't tech savvy..." Set up the screen background to you in front of your trailer and add a LIMITED set of "click for ..." icons and you're good to go. If they can't use that, they probably won't be able to use the FirstStreet stuff, either. YMMV.
