wifi boosters

I'm interested in more info on the "wifi boosters". Some of the camps offer free wifi, but it's usually to far to reach. I usually just use my phone, but it would be nice to pick up wifi on my laptop or kindle fire. Other then going to McDonald's, or the mall, how do most of you pick up wifi?

McDonalds or some other such place.
RV Resorts are too expensive. (They're not camps).

Verizon Jetpak, but it has a monthly fee. We got tired of inadequate campground Wifi, and the worry that they may not be secure, so went for the jetpak. It can be used anywhere we have cell service, even driving. Expensive, but worth it to us, we travel with an iPad 2.
