Will Casita sleep/house 4 comfortably?

should I even be considering a 16-17ft Casita?

I assume king bed in the back, that we all share...

or will it be too tight?

We can eat outside, unless its its raining...then it might get a bit crowded?

I have five kids, 8, 11, 18, 18. There is a 20 year old, who no longer camps with us. We use a Trillium 4500, and a van. The adults sleep in the van.

I considered a Casita for three of us and the sleeping arrangements and interior space limitations made me put that idea aside. It certainly can be done and like the above post you will hear something like "the kids sleep in the tent". So much depends on what you want to use your Casita for? Camping becomes more cumbersome when you have to find a nights stay that will have room for a tent.

Casita owners who are actually sleeping more than two please weigh in with your thoughts!

The Scamp13 Layout 1 with the 54" bed/dinette has a sofa that converts
to bunk beds in the front. Seems like there might be some variant of
the Casita that has the sofa/bunk-beds option?

Although, I don't think that I pictured the bunk beds/sofa, pictures of
the interior of our Scamp 13 can be found in the later segments of the

It also depends on your family - we are tent campers, so sleeping in tight spaces is not particularly unusual for us, and the 13' scamp feels positively spacious. Someone who has never done that or is trying to downsize from a much larger RV might have a harder time with the space.

Also worth considering is that your kids won't be super tiny forever, so if your plan "now" is to share a bigger bed, that might not work out well once they are just a little bigger and more independent.

If/when our grandkids grow too large or too sophisticated to sleep
with us in the trailer, we may let them sleep in the outdoor screen
room/tent?

We don't always carry the CLAM and I agree that it is some additional
work finding a spot for it and setting it up. Still, we occasionally enjoy
the sounds of nature as we sit in our bug-free outdoor space.

Although it won't attach directly to your unit, we decided to use the
CLAM 1660 and optional wind/privacy panels (~$310) instead of
ordering a $900 awning for our Scamp 13.

Compared to our old Quest EZ-Up, the setup and takedown are amazingly
quick and can be done by one person.

The CLAM 1660 screen room/tent is in a fairly long bag that usually
travels on a pad laying on the front sofa or else in our tow vehicle.
It now appears that clamoutdoors.com also has a similar unit in
brown & beige instead of the green.

I agree that the kids will probably grow out of this arrangement pretty fast. "Four in the bed and the little one said…"

We bought our 13' Scamp bunk model when our kids were 6 and 9. They are now 9 and 12, and things are getting tight. When we are spending a whole week at the beach, they now enjoy the independence of their own tent. When a tent is not feasible (like in bear country or when we are moving from place to place) my wife sleeps with the younger in the dinette, head-to-toe, and I share the bunk with the older. My wife was amazed at how much difference the head-to-toe arrangement made in our small 45" dinette bed. With creativity, small beds can work.

As for a rainy day, I actually think I would prefer my Scamp to the Casita because it has two separate sitting areas. My wife and I can read or play cards on the front sofa while the kids play or color at the dinette table, or lounge with a movie or a book on the bed. A Scamp 16' side bath would give an extra 3' of separation.

There are several, but they are very rare on the used market. Any 16' or 17' Casita can be ordered with bunks in the front instead of the bathroom. I have only seen one for sale in that configuration, and it was an older 16'er (with the small 45" bed in the back). Alternatively, 16' and 17' Spirit Deluxe models can be ordered with a sofa/bunk in place of the side dinette. A 17' in that configuration would also give you the larger 54" bed in back and might be the ideal trailer for your family, but again, I've only seen one come up for sale in the last two years.

As has been point out the kids grow fast. Your trailer doesn't grow.
When my kids were those ages, we camped in tent. At 2 years they slept with mom and dad. At 6 in their own tent Not only did they sleep in tents at 6 and 4 they carried their own tent on their back and walked 2 to 3 miles before they got to set up the tent. Today close to 40 they still sleep in tents when camping.
The thought of sleeping in the same space as mom and dad was very unappealing to them.
Bears are not something to worry about. Oh ya, I forgot my ancestors were eaten by bears at a very young age.

I suggest looking at the Parkliner with double bunk option. It's quite similar to a Casita with a full queen size bed plus adult capable double bunks.

We have slept 4 (me, wife, 2 grand kids 4 & 10) in my 2008 Casita SD comfortably. Wife and kids in queen (Ha ha) bed and me on side bunk converted from dinette. When 10 yo out grew bed he slept on mattress pad on floor with feet under bed. Kinda of weird but his idea and it worked..

"Comfortably" is relative and subjective, so it will depend on you and your family. Some groups of 4 can't feel comfortable with less than a 30 foot RV! Others are ok in a 13'er. Try to find a Casita or Scamp of that size, get everyone inside, and sit down for a while. Try moving around in it. Picture yourselves setting up the beds and doing other stuff you'd do while camping. See how it feels.
