Would appreciate ideas about an RV - Completely new camper!

I don't think gas mileage is the primary reason pickup truck owners choose a cap vs. tonneau vs. open- has more to do with what kind of cargo you plan to carry and maybe some appearance preferences as well. In my experience the added weight of a cap over the primary drive wheels is an advantage in some situations.

I agree with you Jon. I wanted a cap or bed cover even if it meant a little less mpg. My Tacoma has the now discontinued step side bed and I couldn't find a cap to fit it so I got a roll top cover and there wasn't much of a selection on those for Toyota step side beds either. I do like to be able to hall certain items and keep the cover closed. Out of sight, out of mind. Plus its nice to have items out of the weather.

I've also heard that driving with an open bed, tailgate closed, doesn't add as much drag as you might expect. The bed becomes a pocket of higher pressure air at speed and acts a lot like a tonneau. Don't know if that's an Internet myth or not...

I think the composition of the cap makes a big difference
We found a very light weight aluminum she'll with large opening windows. Having that on pops me up a couple mpg on my Tacoma X-cab
Our previous truck/shell combo was a full sized GMC with fiberglass shell. Very heavy shell but mileage unaffected, no better or worse
