A movie that I recently saw had a scene where a traveler on a highway asked owners of an RV if they could use their bathroom. There was nothing around except open highways. Would you say yes or no if faced with similar circumstances? Yes, I know it's a hypothetical question but it could happen.

"Depends" --- no, I mean, we should carry some DEPENDS and give that traveler a couple. NOT!

Doesn't really sound like there was much in the way of "woods" around to be discreet in? That would have been my first suggestion, if there were.

Of course, since I don't have a bathroom in my Boler it would be easy

I guess I might offer them a WAG bag, but I wouldn't really want them coming into my trailer to use it.

I carry an "emergency" container and WAG bags in my car (when I don't have the Boler along) for just this sort of situation -- makes me wonder why more people don't (once, in the past, I got stuck on the freeway in a "parking lot" for HOURS after a semi-truck turned over and blocked the highway. It never would have occurred to me to ask someone in an RV to use their bathroom, but it did make me decide to carry my own supplies for such).

NO----BUT if it was a obvious distress situation and I did not feel uncomfortable around that person I may do so.

if it were a guy, I would point to the nearest tree or telephone pole.

Like Ches, If I knew them, it would be OK.. but generally, even close friends that camp with me use the campground johns.

I allow folks to shower tho.

Although you'd have to be really connected to happen to know another traveler on a highway who randomly stopped you to ask to use your bathroom.

Of course I'm a bit of a hermit, myself

Hello Steve Dunkel,
Were you aware that many San Diegans have historically kept and made provisions for workers crossing into the States from Mexico. Many still do. These include water, food, and shelter. It isn't that they wanted the guests on their lands, just that they knew they might show up and felt it the right compassionate thing to prepare for and offer.

Now that you have pointed out the particular scenario, it would seem the compassionate thing to do would be to prepare to aid the traveler by carrying some sort of provisional accessory for the stated purpose. This of course, if one has a predetermined preference not to have a stranger enter their facility.

I'm still thinking about what I would do when asked, but my first inclination was, not.
If I ever find myself owning a unit with a bathroom in it, I will carry a secondary provision for that chance encounter.

I hope others will add some more ideas as to the secondary options for lending this assistance.

Being that we do not have a bathroom option.............we'd have to offer a WAG bag.

I have a standard answer for any and all such requests and situations:

Casitas (and their systems) are like underwear. Everyone should have their own, ....... and don't expect to use mine.

Am I selfish? Maybe. But I paid for it (and all of the associated expenses) and I maintain it. Ergo, .... "I" use it.

We were sort of faced with this a couple of days ago. Coming home from a few days boondocking in the Sequoia NF we drove into the NP to Dorst CG to dump. We decided to continue South through the NP to go home. A few miles down the road we were stopped for construction. We got there at 1:30. The flagman said that we would be escorted through at 2:00 and that everyone was free to get out of their vehicles and stretch their legs.

Immediately, dozens of passengers headed for the woods. Not us! But, the car just ahead of us had two teen-aged girls who were a bit hesitant to venture into the wild. I toyed with the idea of letting them use the head but was worried that others would line up, too. Fortunately they got over their embarrassment and disappeared into the woods.

I guess my answer is that it depends on the situation.

we have no bathroom...simply a portapottie. but my gut instinct is to say no. i am not generally like that, but i have a "thing" about it....and i wouldn't ever ask anyone if i could use their's, either. i use the campground facilities, even if i am sitting at their trailer.

Well, I unexpectedly learned something new. I never knew what a WAG bag was before. Seems like a good thing to have on hand in case of emergencies. I keep a large ActionPacker in the back of my truck that contains jumper cables, tie down straps, 1 qt of motor oil, air compressor, rags, first aid kit, etc. I'll probably add a few of the WAG bags for just in case. Are they all about the same or are some better than others. It's not exactly something I would care trying out.

Ok, picture this.
There is nothing around but open highway and I have got to take a dump or pee really bad. You are all telling me to use a wag bag?
I have never used one or seen one, but here is what I picture...I just pull down my pants out in the open, stick this bag by my hinder and leg it fly. Anyone and everyone can see me using it. YIKES!!!! NO THANKS. Remember the origional poster says we are out in the open, no trees around, no tall grass, no where to hide.
I would personally let the person use my facilities and take my chances that they were honest and really needed to "go". Any of us could find ourselves in that predicament and hopefully someone will feel our pain and help us out if need be.
I would think you all are thinking of safety and thinking.........does that person really need to use my facilities that badly.
Would I really want to offer up my potty to a stanger, , no. But would I. Yes I would.
Now if it were a man that had to pee I would tell him to go to the other side of the camper and water the wheel or something.

Re the WAG bag: I was assuming that since it was on a highway, you would have a vehicle (car or truck) to retreat to (vs. standing out in the open).

WAG bags are pretty neat. I favor them over Porta-Pottis myself.
