Bear!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it finally happened. A bear that has been feeding on the apples in our orchard decided he would explore my 13' Scamp. I had left the ceiling vent open and one of the rear windows open about 2" Well, Mr. Bear pushed the window open and pushed the screen to the inside of the trailer. He then pulled the back of the seat, that has the floppy end attached, outside. I will have to replace the whole thing. In pulling the seat-back out through the window he really clawed the foam and left large pieces of foam missing and dug a large hole in the upholstery material. You wouldn't think that seat-back would go out that window, but Mr. Bear surely did it.. I looked out back of the wood-shed one day last week and wondered what that dark object was lying next to the trailer. Well I found out, when I walked over to the trailer. The screen wasn't hurt. By pushing it back into the groove it snaps back into place. I have checked with Scamp and will be purchasing a seat-back and hope the upholstery material matches. I have been trying to keep the trailer ax original as it was when new. No scratches on the outside, thank heavens. Just wanted everyone to know that Mr. or Mrs. Bear isn't always in the woods. Marg

I'm distressed to learn that our eggs are not bear proof!
I always figured I only had to worry that the raccoons would take the hinge bolts off and get in.

Glad to know the shell was not hurt and that you can replace the damage.

Sounds like you got off easy... usually they totally trash whatever they get into. I've seen videos at Yosemite National Park warning people about bears and leaving food in cars. The bear just walks up to the closed up car, hooks its claws into the top edge of the door and peels it open like a sardine can..barely (no pun ) any effort at all! Then they go inside and tear up the whole interior.
I imagine a bear could get into almost any trailer it wants to once it learns the weak spots. I'm actually surprised it doesn't happen more often.
Sorry your Scamp got mauled!
Fran

Unfortunately, AFAIK... All the prefire fabrics are lost to history and no longer available from Scamp.
Please take a photo of one of your cushions and post it here, maybe one of us will have some fabric or cushions to match.
Sorry for your trouble.

The best bear repellant is bacon grease. Use in liberal amounts.

Do you dab bacon grease behind the ears before hiking?

Yes that would work well. But I'm not certain that you could get the bear to sit still that long for the application.

But it's such a good story!! I just got back from two wonderful weeks in my Scamp, only to find my cats had pee'd on (and ruined) my oak floor. Who wants to hear that one? Nobody! A bear story is downright majestic!

Two women we know ran a cafe in Port Alsworth, Alaska. They had a locked chest type freezer on the porch where they stored a large amount of bread (only access to Port A. is to fly in). Bears, grizzlies, managed to get in the freezer. Wonder if they thought the bread was home made.

I'll try to get a picture posted. I've tried before without much success. My trailer is a 2005 with the dark blue plaid fabric. Thanks for your offer. Marg

actually i'm pretty impressed he didn't tear the wall apart.
we had a bear come into camp in northern michigan last spring. but he must have decided what ever was in that trailer wasn't edible, of course we were dry camping and showers were a little hard to come by....
