Bed Size

Bed Size
Quick question...

I'm just wondering about the bed sizes of the common glass trailers. Our Boler's rear bed is about 36-40 inches max, not all of which is practically useable because of the curve on the backside. What are the other makers like? I'm especially wondering about the current ones (Scamp & Casita). How wide are their rear beds? The literature mostly just reports "double" bed in the rear. (Which sure as heck isn't a conventional double-bed width!). Scamp DOES report a 54" wide bed for their deluxe (wood) models, but doesn't report the width on the standards.

Thanks

17 ft. Casita

Mike, I don't know the exact dimension (I can search for it), but I recently bought a feather bed to put on top.

I got a Double. It was too small!!

I returned it for a Queensize, and it fits perfectly...

Yes, I'm happy!

And, even though I have a Liberty (which is the floorplan that makes the Kingsize bed), I'm just talking about the ''double'' bed in the back room. With the 17 footer we find we don't need the Kingsize bed.

Our 13' Trillium is 48" which would be a 3/4 bed. I'm sure the 15' Trilliums have a 54".

Casita
Mary, pretty much nailed it.

16 ft Casita is 48'' and the 17 is 54'' (except for the Liberty that does make into a king bed).

When I got a feather bed for mine, I bought a double. Even though it was 48'', it fit perfectly. With the added height of the feather bed and the high loft mattress pad, regular double sheets fit perfectly on the 48 In bed.

Suz, didn't you notice Mary's post about the size of her bed in the back room. I couldn't believe that you didn't say anything. Wish I had a back bedroom.

No, Ron, that one just flew by me. See, I have a back room, too, so I didn't even notice. Mine is just on the other side of the dining room and kitchen. Kinda centered between the two. Ah, have you seen my sign? Mary did.

Larry and Sherrin Delk own a 17 foot fiberglass wonder.

I was actually standing beside him, when he ask his wife if he could go inside and make a sandwich.

Sherrin replied "Ok, but eat it in the kitchen, because I just cleaned the trailer!."

True story.

Only thing ... I watched him.

Larry got even by eating his sandwich in the trailer's front hallway, crumbs falling everywhere!

To get back on track ... atleast Larry didn't eat the sandwich in bed.

Mike ... the bed dimensions for Casitas have been accurating posted. 13 and 16 foot are 48 inches. 17 foot trailer is 54 inches ... but my three rigs have all had the kingsize bed option ... which we use.

I figure if you're comfortable in bed, you're comfortable anywhere you go (because your bed is always with you!)

Boler 13' rear bed size

Posted by Rick F.D., Member, Hudson, MA - USA:

Boler 13' rear bed size

The rear bed area of my 13' 1978 Boler is 48" x 78". The 48" is measured from the inside rear wall, forward to the edges of the closet and sink structures. To get the full 48" you need a filler/extension where the 6"x 45* seat chamfer is located.
Good luck,

Hi all
These bed sizes in RVs are all made by aguy whos measuring tape has 12'' missing on one end, at least thats my opinion. I had to resort to a good bunk bed system so we could have a good size bed,At least thats one of my reasons for going that way.

I went back out today and remeasured - perhaps I was being a bit pessimistic.

If I measure from the WALL to the closet/kitchen edge - I should be able to squeek out about 46". Adding that bed extension was gonna be one of my spring projects anyway. Haven't decided if I want to add the extension to the backside (certainly easier that way) - or if I want to add it to the front where the angled bit is. I don't think it would be TOO hard to make an extension that matched the contours and that stayed in position (by adding a support rail to the front edge of the seats with holes for pins to keep in in place).

Have to admit - I think the appeal of the Liberty floorplan is becoming more clear to me now.

bed size

Posted by Maggie O., Member, virginia:

My idea is to take out the closet and kicthen, install two bulkheads either plywood or fiberglass just inside the door. This would make the bed area 5'6" x the width of the trailer. I would also like to take out the front bunks and make a dinette. With a porta potty and my camp stove I think I could be happy. Only problem is I don't know how to do any of this. We have a fiberglass camper shell in our yard waiting to be painted. We bought the paint a week ago and are waiting for 65 degree weather. Apparently hell has frozen over and the shell sits under a foot of snow. This is slowing down our adventures with fiberglass.

Gutting a 13'er

Gutting a 13'er
Sounds like a plan to me...

One suggestion: How about captain's chairs in the front instead of a dinette? Should be plenty of room if the kitchen is going too.

The downside of course is that you'll be losing 100% of your storage space - except what you create for yourself under the bed. I suppose you could move the closet over where the kitchen had been...

If it were me - I think I'd made the front half of the bed a fold-out (like a futon) so it could serve double duty as a couch at times.

You'll also likely REALLY want to add some sort of screen room or something to the front.

I've tried to do a lot of forward-thinking myself. Right now - with the kids, being able to sleep 4 is vital. But after they have moved on - Dianne and I plan on taking more summer trips around the country and would want something ideal for two. We're still in the process of deciding what is important for us. If the space inside is important - we'll probably go with a 16 footer. If we decide that having something ultra-light is more important however - we'll likely do something more like what you are planning. Of course - if you can live with a slightly smaller bed - you can build something more similar to the wooden Scamp with a 54" bed, 12" closet/pantry and narrower 'kitchen' (which to you may just be another closet/storage space).

I'd clean off that roof if I were you...

Or prop up some sort of support inside. They've been known to collapse under such loads...

what fun. tear it out and put it back like you want. good idea.
surely the snow will be gone next week, Maggie O. it is mid Feb. can't last too long.
I have a friend that keeps saying what if you want to play cards cause it raining. she thinks I need a table and chairs inside. that's what the awning or screen room is for. I'm here to camp. be in the great outdoors. I never sit inside when its raining. I like being out under some type of awning. Once it rained so much, water was gushing over our feet from under the rv. but it was fun. I was relatively dry, comfortable. this last spring it was cold. did we go inside? no way. sit by the fire, shiver and talk and laugh. inside, I might as well go home. Now when its hot with need of ac then that's another horse color.

We travel in a small pickup with a camper shell. Till now we use a tent and a screen house. I'd still set up a screen house. I was thinking we don't need much storage space 'cause we can carry what we need in the truck and want to keep that trailer light. Another thought we had was maybe we should buy newer and see if we like it. Resale has got to be better on one in stock condition.

resale

resale
I dunno - I don't think we've seen enough seriously altered trailers get sold to have any idea how that would affect resale. Probably lower it for a newer one - harder to say for an older one.

If you're thinking of getting an experimental one first though - I'd definatly suggest an older one. Even if the resale drops down to 0% you won't be out that many bucks.
