Bigfoot Axle

We have a 1989 17' Bigfoot and am wondering if any of the other Bigfoot owners trailers also have a dropped axle like in ours or if this one has been changed. Biggest problem with the dropped axle is the clearance for the plumbing on the left rear corner. Not enough ground clearance for my liking so am looking at replacing the axle with a straight one which would give me another 3 to 4" of clearance. Hoping it doesn't make the entrance step harder for getting in and out. Any thoughts?

My 1980 has a drop axle. The drain has 7" clearance, about the same as the axle tube. For anything to strike the drain it would have to hit the driver's side spring shackle first.
