Black mold & mildew

Yesterday I washed our 5er for the first time since we purchased it 18 months ago. I cleaned up the front and sides a few times, but never climbed up onto the roof with a scrub brush before. It was too dirty to think about. The one time I looked up there everything was a dark gray with large black spots all over it.

I got out the ladder (The roof of ours is 8'7" off the ground) and took up the hose and a large soft brush and a gallon of Zep mold and mildew remover. I'm here to tell you that the stuff really works. It probably has a 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach diluted into this gallon of solution, but what it does to black mildew and mold and black streaks and dirt is amazing. 15 minutes on the roof and I was back down on the ground. Now of course what is left to do is lightly scrub off the oxidation and then put on two cleanings of Gel Gloss and a bit of wax. But at least the dreaded black roof was cleaned in no time flat.

Now the next major project is to remove the old roofing sealant around the vent pipes and skylights and clean it up and reapply new. I saw a thread on here about the procedure for that, but I think it was pre-hack. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Soo, trying to clean up that 5th wheel for the Oregon Gathering? Wanna come do my Scamp's roof Paul I can't climb up on the roof, wouldn't hold my weight, so I have to use a ladder, brush on a long handle and s-t-r-e-t-c-h.

Hi Paul,
I'm wondering how this turned out for you now that some time has passed? Did the mildew try to return at all?
My little trailer was *covered* in mildew on the exterior, walls, rock guard, roof, everywhere! I used some Tilex type bathroom cleaner and elbow grease on parts of it this past weekend and it seemed to be doing a good job, but now that it's been a bit rainy out the mildew seems to have returned some.

Spraying 4 parts water and 1 part liquid Lysol will keep the mold and mildew at bay. Straight Lysol will also kill the crawly bugs, just pour in the hidden spots and let "dry", when the bugs walk over and then clean themselves, they die. Careful with kids and pets. Air out before using.

As pointed out in another part of this forum, a good thing for the roaches and ants is Borax! It also is much less toxic.
