Brakes for a 1976 Trillium 1300

The axle on this trailer is in good shape, with the wheels sitting great in the wheel well. No sag at all.

The axles do have a square mounting pad for installing brakes. Do I just buy a left and right brake assembly? I see there is 7" and 10". I assume for a light trailer like this, I just need 7", correct? The ones I have seen online don't seem to have a drum. Do I need to buy that too, or is it part of the brake assembly.

I have no concerns with doing the job. I just would like to know what I need before getting in to it.

You will need brake assembly's which consist of backing pates, shoes, magnets and hardware and you will also need hub and drum assemblies which include new bearings. Eastern Marine Trailer Parts Superstore website will give you some ideas of the parts you need. You can most likely get the parts you need locally but the Eastern website will give you a good place to start.

You will also need wiring including a brake away switch and a brake controller.

Thanks for your input, Jack. Thomas G just PM'd me with similar information. Realizing I needed to change the hub to a drum/hub combo was the bit of information that made the light bulb go on in me head.

I will go to Eastern Marine to have a look, but no doubt can get the stuff locally.

I finally found a video on adding brakes, most of them just dealt with changing the brake assembly, which is what had me questioning the drum thing in the first place.

One important thing I learned while putting brakes on our 13' Scamp, was when having a leading arm suspension, one needs to switch "left for right, and right for left" to have them work properly.
