The thing that worries me all most as much as the frame failure is the fact that the safety chains didn't do their job. Exactly where or how did they fail??

that's a sweet configuration! Just what I'm looking for in a slight upgrade from our sweet little 13. Was that factory or did the fella who owned it do the mod? When we were there at Casita, they would'nt talk to us about custom configs at all.

Although there aren't many requests for them, Casita does, ocassionally produce a unit without a bathroom.

Interesting! A "late model" Liberty Standard! I've never seen one of those before... (I knew they still offered 'em, but most folks order with the bath.) That extra bunk is great!

Although we have only owned our 84 Model Casita for a year now, we have taken it all over the place.
After spending the thanksgiving weekend at State Park in Lake Charles Louisiana, with our family "who is also a member of the Casita family"

Making our way towards Corpus Christi, just coming out of Houston, going over an overpass, i felt two tugs on the back our F-250 crew cab, and looked in the rear view mirror to see our Casita whipping back and forth sideways behind our truck. As soon as i left off the gas the safety chains broke, and our Casita, crashed into the guard rail, and then darted across the median heading towards the traffic on the other side of the freeway, thank god the guard rail stopped it before it hit anybody.. Nobody was hurt, and truck didn't suffer any damage.
The tow truck driver showed up and i asked him to pull it off the freeway to the Kmart parking lot, where i already had a flatbed trailer waiting. As soon as the tow truck hooked on to our Casita, he got stuck in the mud and told me it would cost ANOTHER $175.00 bucks if i couldn't pull him out..
So i hooked his chain to my truck and yanked the tow truck and our Casita out of mud.. loaded the Casita on the flatbed, headed to a friends shop and rewelded the hitch back on, and finally made it home, and have been looking for a replacement Casita while we totally remodel this one..

Phil,

Sorry to hear about that... Wow! You guys sure were lucky! As everyone else stated... So glad that no one was hurt! Marlisa and I had a similar experience on the way home from the River Valley Egg Rally, but nothing like what you went through. All that happened to was the coupler came off of the ball. Thankfully the chains saved us, as I hadn't hooked up the break-away break chain!

On another note... Are you guys going to Bandera? Marlisa and I are currently looking for a new egg and would like to be there. Let us know we enjoyed meeting you guys at Pineknot.

No, unfortunately I am no longer with Oliver. So, I do not have a fiberglass camper at the moment. Although I love the Oliver, it is out of my price range. We are currently looking for a fiberglass camper, preferably something with nostalgia like the Trialorboat or something.

"they held on a for a little bit, the hooks are what didnt hold up.."

I'm surprised the hooks had time to bend and that the chains didn't snap, but it may have been a twisting force. Some states do not allow the S-hooks, but I had always presumed that was because it's too easy to hook them up backwards so they rattle out. Clearly, however, the forged hooks with the snap retainers look stronger.
